Who would have thought this would happen? Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, a sequel nobody really wanted with a relatively small budget of $90 million, has outgrossed a film that starred The Mighty Thor.

On its fifth weekend of release, Jumanji held on to the number one spot on the box office chart. The Dwayne Johnson-led motion picture has grossed close to $317 million in the US; which almost $4 million more than Thor: Ragnarok's $313 million.

By the end of its theaterical run,  analysts predict that the film will have grossed $375 million stateside and $820 million worldwide.

Have you seen Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle yet?

That's pretty impressive. Seems like this came out of nowhere and surprisingly became a hit. The cast pretty great but I don't have any interest checking it out in cinema but I'll definitely watch it. Congrats

I enjoyed Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle more than I thought I would, so congratulations to this film for doing very well.

I hope the screen writers for the movie will help with more comic book movies in the future. I know they have but this particular team did a good job with Jumanji and I hope to see what they could Do with either the DC universe or the Marvel universe.

Nostalgia primarily was the draw for this movie, mixed with the video game aspects that also hit a nostalgic spot for many. I know several people who were not interested in the movie until it showed the 'extra lives' and 'powers' aspects in the trailer.

Either way, it does not have much competition;

- Ragnarok was winding down at that time
- Justice League was around but barely drawing fans
- Star Wars was divisive creating mixed reviews turning people away

January is basically empty other than Horror movies and most people enjoy comedies so Jumanjii making money makes quite a bit of sense with everything factored in.

@Vagabond -

Not sure why you got up-votes. Nothing remotely salty - other than yourself who clearly cares enough to make a silly remark in response to an analysis of why it was popular.

@Scarilian - Um January has Maze Runner and 12 Strong

@Vagabond -

I loved the original Jumanjii, unlike many here i've seen it several times. I would never be jealous of it's sequel being successful. Quit trolling.

@Avengersfan242 -
Neither film is a comedy so does not compete with Jumanjii in that regard; Maze Runner is action/mystery, 12 Strong is a war drama. Both are also getting average reviews around 50% generally.

Maze Runner's prior movies have made $348.3m and $312.3m - both have earned more than the budget, but neither really has a massive control over the target audience. While i enjoyed the prior Maze Runner movies i dont think they could be considered a big level of competition, plus it's not released in the US until the 26th of January.

I usually hate US comedy films. The vast majority of them are just unfunny to me but this wasn't bad. I was pleasantly surprised.

Well deserved. Blew my expectations out of the water. A great win on behalf of Sony....Hopefully they don't [frick] it up in the future.

I liked it. I can't help but think that a good part of its success has to do with the lack of competition. The only reason I saw was there was nothing better to see. But good on them ,I'm looking forward to a sequel.

I like how people like to pit every movie from every other studio against Marvel. Shows how strong their brand really is.
