Was THOR: RAGNAROK Ever Going To Include The Franchise's Human Characters?

The God of Thunder spends only a very small amount of time on Midgard in Thor: Ragnarok but was it ever the plan for the likes of Erik Selvig and Jane Foster to show up here? Hit the jump to find out...

One of the biggest problems fans seemed to have with the previous Thor movies is the fact that so much time was spent on Earth as opposed to Asgard. However, what that meant was that we got to spend time with human characters like Jane Foster, Darcy Lewis, and Dr. Erik Selvig. Thor: Ragnarok does bring the God of Thunder back to Midgard but that lot is literally nowhere to be seen this time.

While you might think that's because of contractual issues or the fact that they might not have wanted to return (Selvig will actually appear in Avengers: Infinity War), the truth is that it was never the plan for them to appear in the threequel. That's according to the movie's screenwriter Eric Pearson:

"No. No, they never did. This is such a different one, and Sakaar and the Hulk take up so much time. Sakaar is crazy enough on its own. If you brush by it... people probably already think it's verging on too crazy. So, if you were to just gloss over that, then I think that people would have been bothered or not enjoyed it as much. So, we only had so much real estate -- plus the introduction of Valkyrie, who I think really came together as a fantastic supporting character. Tessa was so great."

We have no idea if a fourth Thor movie will ever happen but it will be interesting seeing what direction that takes as Ragnarok was very much cosmic in nature and that seemed to pay off for the God of Thunder in a big way. Are you guys disappointed about the lack of characters from Midgard in the movie? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts on this news in the comments section below.

Naaaaaa enough With Darcy and if Natalie Portman doesn't want to do it what's the point in having her. Give me selvig like the article says in infinity war and I'm good with that.

With exception to Eric Selvig, all the human characters in the Thor franchise sucked. Especially Natalie Portman who had no chemistry with Chris Hemsworth and always looked like she was really phoning it in.

I saw a bootleg version and I’m still gonna go see it but I just wanna say.... this movie is not an episode of Seinfeld like critics are making it out to be. It has serious moments and it’s not the comedy cellar. Does it have comedy? Yes but it isn’t like every 5 seconds is a joke. The first 5 minutes are [frick]ing incredible I mean truly. Doctor Strange’s scene was probably my favorite. It moves very fast but being able to see Thor actually be a badass who’s power is unleashed was great to see. Oh and Jeff Bridges was amazing. A few minor changes but overall a damn good movie and the best Thor movie by a mile.

I think that Marvel is beginning to realize that non-powered/hero love interestsand supporting characters only work for heroes who actively keep a foot in that world. Spider-Man keeps his secret identity and so that half of his life still has tension and meaning. Iron Man is as much a corporate playboy as a superhero, and so Happy and Pepper make sense. Ant-man is trying to be a good father to his child, so he has a dramatic reason to stay grounded.

But MCU Thor was never trying to live with the secret identity of Donald Blake. There was never any place for the regular humans in the story past the first film. Doctor Strange ran into the same problem with Rachel McAdams, and every character has this issue compounded by the existence of the Avengers, which gives them plenty of opportunity to interact with other super-powered beings. They don’t necessarily need to be grounded by relationships with people who can’t truly know or be involved in what they do.
