THOR: THE DARK WORLD's Natalie Portman Hints At Upcoming Female Superhero Film(s)

Just about all superhero movies have been about the men. But that’s about to change, according to Thor: The Dark World actress Natalie Portman. Portman echoed the rumours of a prospective Captain Marvel movie and more besides.

"There are definitely many strong women, but it will be exciting when there is a central female character which I think is coming – I have heard is coming – and, of course, also a central non-white character will also be exciting. Title characters."

"But they do definitely have strong female characters in them," she adds, "and I think it’s a testament to the people who run Marvel, their respect, their just normal human respect for women, the way they want to characterise them; you can tell when men talk to you, as just a person or as a ‘woman’"

Thor: The Dark World was set to be the first big superhero flick to be helmed by a woman -- Monster director Patty Jenkins. Portman comments on this, and doesn't hide the fact that she was disappointed when directing gig went to Game Of Thrones‘ Alan Taylor.

“I was very upset because Patty Jenkins is a wonderful woman,” she tells SciFiNow. “I was excited to work with her but I understood why she chose to leave and Alan Taylor is really wonderful, so it was bittersweet.”

Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Thor: The Dark World is directed by Alan Taylor, from a screenplay written by Christopher Yost. The film opens in theaters Nov 8, 2013. It stars: Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), and Christopher Eccleston as Malekith.

No DC did not..has yet to be a female lead as the main character.
Marvel will do that first but it should've been Wonder Woman by now.

Black Panther MUST HAVE IS OWN FRANCHISE.
What the hell is the problem? I'm sure it's in the works but it should be at the forefront.

DC......well, WB...I don't think DC makes the decisions on which characters get produced as feature films.........but WB SHOULD have gotten to market first with a Wonder Woman movie or even having another go at Supergirl.....'embarrassing on their part if Marvel produces a female-starring tentpole superhero film first.

hmm, although technically we have had "Catwoman" and "Elektra".....although "Elektra" wasn't Marvel and "Catwoman".....yeah no idea, 'never saw it, never will.

Actually, Patty Jenkins was not the first woman set to direct a big superhero movie. Even though it tanked miserably, Lexi Alexander did "Punisher: War Zone".

@fett

Its not why we like women but in an action movie you want someone who is tough and kicks ass. The Bride should have shown these studios how its done. In fact screw The Bride, Ripley and Sarah Connor held it down back in their day.

Personally I think its a merchandising thing, little boys wont buy Wonder Woman/Captain Marvel costumes etc so less dollars for all involved. That's why strong female leads tend to appear outside of the PG-12 arena.

They need to treat female superhero movies as they would a male superhero movie.
Treat the lead character with respect, don't turn her into a joke

Like Wonder Woman
She needs to be ruthless, someone who could equally be a match for any male superhero.

Portman is one of the biggest names in Hollywood. That she sounds confident talking about a female super hero and BP only reaffirms that those 2 movies are absolutely coming, and sooner rather then later. I love Don Cheadle and War Machine. I think the Falcon will be a great addition but neither of them can carry a feature. BP can and will.

Hopefully she's not talking about just an Agent Carter TV show. Not gonna mind a female lead, but would much prefer one who actually has powers and is leading in a feature film.

"Unfortunately DC destroys Marvel when it comes to strong female characters, outside of the X-Men you mostly have a bunch of derivative heroines, some of whom are great characters in their own right but still less cool than their male counterparts. However I would love to see a Black Widow solo flick although I doubt that is ever coming."

Not sure who in DC you are referring to... Lois Lane in MoS (not counting Margot you-gotta-be-Kidd-ing-me), Talia(and that is mulligan), and Catwoman twice so far, Poison Ivy was decent but the movie was awful. Also Carol Ferris, but she did basically nothing in GL.

Marvel has had Jane Foster soon to be twice, Pepper Potts 3 times, Black Widow twice, Betty Ross twice, Agent Carter, Maria Hill, Elektra twice, Sue Storm twice soon to be more, Gwen Stacy (i won't count MJ as she was whiny for three films) and that's not even counting the X-Men films. All of which play medium to heavy levels of no-nonsense strong female characters.

If you are going based on comics alone, there are certainly a lot for DC, but how many are actually good and could work for film. Wonder Woman. Hawkgirl(but they will never make a movie with this character). Star Sapphire could work if they ever get the GL films off the ground again, which I hope they will. Then it's mostly just Batman villains like Catwoman, Harley, and Poison Ivy. Now there is Batgirl and Supergirl. But for whatever reason WB/DC seem to be having issues bringing out any female leads and if they cant do Wonder Woman right then i don't know how good a Batgirl or Supergirl film could actually be.
