Ever since Eternals was released to mostly negative reviews (we still don't think it deserves that "Rotten" status), it looks like Marvel Studios has taken a different approach to storytelling.
Both Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder are quite a bit shorter than other recent MCU movies, with the latter actually clocking in at under two hours. It appears Marvel Studios is looking to tell more concise, action-packed stories, though that inevitably means a lot of great content winds up on the cutting room floor.
While we haven't seen any full reviews for Thor: Love and Thunder yet, one recurring complaint we've seen in the social media reactions is that Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher would have benefitted from a little more screentime. Now, the actor has revealed two deleted scenes that would have shown him sharing the screen with a couple of MCU vets.
"I got to work with Peter Dinklage. That's not in the final film, but I got to work with him. He's fantastic," Bale reveals in the video below. "I got to work with Jeff Goldblum. He's not in the final film. As you see, a lot of stuff ends up on the cutting room floor even though it is beautiful, brilliant stuff."
It sounds like both actors have been completely cut from Thor: Love and Thunder, and this points to some major moments with Gorr that Marvel Studios and Taika Waititi decided not to include. Dinklage played Eitri the Dwarf in Avengers: Infinity War, while Goldblum stole the show in Thor: Ragnarok as the unhinged Grandmaster.
Perhaps Gorr killed them both while hunting Thor and the decision was made to keep them around for future stories? Whatever the case may be, we hope that these scenes eventually see the light of day!
The movie finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.
Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn among others.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released in theaters on July 8, 2022.
