RICK AND MORTY Star And Co-Creator Justin Roiland Facing Felony Domestic Violence Charges After 2020 Incident

Rick and Morty has quickly become a beloved animated classic, but this news is no laughing matter as co-creator and star Justin Roiland is facing serious charges after allegations made back in 2020...

Entertainment Weekly (via Toonado.com) has confirmed that Justin Roiland, the main star and co-creator of Adult Swim's hit animated series Rick and Morty, is facing felony domestic violence charges after a 2020 incident in Orange County, California.

The criminal complaint was originally filed way back in May 2020, and the 42-year-old was charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit. The alleged victim's identity has not been made public, though the "Jane Doe" was reportedly dating Roiland at the time.

Roiland, who lends his voice to Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith (among other characters) in Rick and Morty, pleaded not guilty back in October 2020 and appeared in court yesterday for a pretrial hearing, hence why this news has only just started doing the rounds online.

The filmmaker and actor's attorney has issued a statement on his client's behalf that states, "It is hard to overstate how inaccurate the recent media coverage of this situation has been."

"To be clear, not only is Justin innocent but we also have every expectation that this matter is on course to be dismissed once the District Attorney's office has completed its methodical review of the evidence. We look forward to clearing Justin's name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible."

It's important to point out that Roiland has not been convicted of any crimes and no trial date has been set. Rick and Morty season 6 wrapped up in December 2022, and while season 7 is on the way - as part of a long-term 70-episode deal made back in 2018 - there's currently no word on how this ongoing case could impact the beloved sci-fi series.

The Emmy-winner also stars in Hulu's Solar Opposites and also recently lent his voice to hit video game High on Life, while many of Rick and Morty's writers have gone on to find great success in the MCU.

We don't expect to hear any more details for a while (the next pretrial is set for April), but we'll be sure to keep you updated as this story progresses in the coming months.

very serious and explicit allegations

accuser isnt revealing themselves so they arent really gaining anything by making false accusations.

@dracula - "one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit."

These days it could be anything though. It might be that he slapped her one night and menaced her if she leaves. Or he could be that he punched her every Friday and tied her to a radiator.

The Depp/Heard trial teached us that most of the time, it's two people that love each other but drink/drug themselves too much until things escalate into worst and worst confrontations, until someone realize that a competition of who is the shittiest person is not an healthy relationship.

My bet is that when we hear the entire story, we'll just think "well, that was just some private shit that should never have been made public".

@Usernametaken -

This is a 2020 incident/incidents that was unreported for all this time.

The only reason we now know is that this case will be before the courts.

And the alleged victim is unnammed nor has she made any attempts to publicise these events.

This is hardly "some private shit that should never have been made public".

@Ginley - It was reported in 2020. He was arrested for it in 2020.

@ScaryTerry - thats why i said
“could be true, could be bs

Guess only time will tell”

For now just pointing out what could point to it being true

The woman is gaining nothing, so if its a lie what could be her motivation

Once this goes to trial opinions on both sides will probably change

@dracula - Oh I get it, man. I was supporting your comment. So tired of the court of public opinion at this point.

@kazuma -

Someone else made the following comment and it's probably relevant to your response, so I will post it again.

"I did a search around May of 2020 and a few months after, and I gotta say it seems like this was heavily suppressed before now. There are a couple of small, moderately reputable outlets that reported on it in May, and a few mentions throughout that year, but that was it. AV Club definitely didn’t cover it. Really shows how craven certain people are here that they’ll pretend like this was already big news in order to dismiss allegations against someone they like."

@Ginley - I wasn't trying to "suppress" anything. You said "This is a 2020 incident/incidents that was unreported for all this time", and I said "It was reported in 2020. He was arrested for it in 2020.".

It was reported. It's just a long process for these things to go through.

You gotta... well do an expected an eye rolling groan hearing how everyone reacted to this news before you know READING the entire story instantly jumping down the idea that Roiland was guilty when for all we know he simply could have been accused of such a crime and be totally innocent. Like seriously in this day and age society instantly just likes jumping on ANYONE for a potential target and yeah sometimes it's well deserved but.... sometimes it isn't so for those jumping now if this winds up being bunk just try and remember the lesson next time something like this happens okay?
