Marvel E-i-C Axel Alonso On PREACHER Becoming An AMC Live-Action TV Show

Well before his days at Marvel, Alonso worked as a Vertigo Comics editor & helped shape Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Preacher. With such familiarity with the source material, does Marvel Comics' top boss have a strong opinion about the forthcoming TV show from Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg?

Anyone familiar with Garth Ennis and the stellar work he's done for Vertigo Comics has to be positively giddy with the news that the television network behind The Walking Dead is set to bring Ennis and Dillon's crazy vision of a deity-imbued Texas preacher and his mission to bring God to task for abandoning his creations. Working alongside Ennis and Dillon at Vertigo was Axel Alonso, the man most people know as the Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics. Here's his reaction to the news that AMC is moving forward with its plans for a live-action Preacher tv series. "Love it [that AMC is moving forward]. It's long overdue. I miss editing that book. Don't miss wondering if I still had a job after an issue came out, though. [Laughs] Yeah, it's been talked about for some time -- both as a feature film and TV series, which it's much better suited to. I'm really curious to see how the story gets adapted, because there's only so much that you can tone down the source material before you destroy it. On the surface, it's a macabre spaghetti western, but it's got a lot to say about the society, organized religion, and just how plain #$%#$ed up people can be. The network that does it needs to be brave."

Alonso touches on a question nearly every Preacher fan must be asking themselves, "Just how is AMC, a basic-cable network, going to stay true to source material that has such a decidedly dark and satirical slanton religion, racism and America in general?" If Rogen and Goldberg nail down the script, Preacher has the potential to surpass The Walking Dead as the most-watched television show on TV. Hopefully, they succeed and that sparks renewed interest in a few other Ennis properties (such as The Boys).

I've never read the book, so tinkering around with some of the source material won't affect me as much as it will readers of the book. I'll have to check it out some day, though. I heard it was good and controversial.

But I have a lot of faith in Rogen and Goldberg; I was a fan of This Is The End, I'm going to see The Interview, and I heard they were wanted for an Uncharted movie, but they declined, which makes me more curious of what I'm in for.

Its going to be interesting. Especially the religious and social landmines its going to step on.

If they played it 100% straight on network cable, AMC would be sued, protested and rioted against.

"there's only so much that you can tone down the source material before you destroy it."

Is he talking about Preacher or the upcoming Fantastic Four Reboot.

If there is any network that can give us an awesome television take on the Preasher, is AMC. With that being said I hope Seth Rogans involvement doesn't end up turning this potentially great adaption into a parody of it's self. I like Rogan but he does have a tendency to take something very serious and flip it on it's head by making it to much of a comedy. The Preasher has comedic elements but I'm worried that we might get a slapstick version of this great book. If AMC wants another hit like the Walking Dead, the show runners are going to have to be prepared to do a balancing act with the source material along with being careful not to water down the violence and the social commentary. Considering how violent the Walking Dead can get, I'm hoping this shouldn't be a concern. Either way I'm very excited that we are getting a Preasher tv series and that it's going to be on AMC. I believe AMC is the best network for an adaption of this kind outside the realm of premium channels like HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime. Let's hope that this show will rock!
