THE WALKING DEAD Ratings Take A Huge Dive This Season

This week’s episode of AMC's, The Walking Dead, managed to pull in about 7.8 million viewers.  For most shows this would be an amazing result, but for a show that pulled in over 10 million an episode for 5 straight seasons, this is not the case.

The season eight premiere of the show was the first real indication that the show was starting to lose a significant amount of steam.  This season's premiere episode "Mercy", pulled in 11.44 million viewers, the lowest since the season 3 premiere of 10.97 million.  The show still clearly has a large following, but should the creators be concerned about diminishing returns?

This season’s ratings have been on a downward spiral:

8.1 “Mercy” – 11.44 million
8.2 “The Damned” – 8.92 million
8.3 “Monsters” – 8.52 million
8.4 “Some Guy” – 8.69 million
8.5 “The Big Scary U” – 7.84 million

While 7.8 million viewers is still a huge amount, is The Walking Dead in trouble?

Has higher viewing figures than a majority of other shows. The drop after the opening occurs in most shows, people tend to tune in for the key moments which is why mid-season finales became a thing.

This show needs a huge shift. I still sorta watch but theres so many dull empty moments that Im thinking about quitting. I'm already tired of Negan and maybe the other fans are too.

@Kevwebsz - Mr. "I Lean Back While Talking" is a terrible character. Terrible in the show and the comic.

Seriously, watch how he does the little lean back thing every time he starts talking. You won't be able to not notice. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is AWFUL

@KaioKen - Jeffrey is perfect. Michael Keaton has "character" body language as well and so does Denzel Washington. It's not a new thing.

Story-line has gotten stale.
Writing has no tension involved.
Threat has been diminished.
It's lost that survive or die aspect and tension that made it what it once was.

@Imprtracr1 - Exactly. The world building killed the show and the comic.

@Imprtracr1 - It's also a miserable story. People keep dying and no matter where they go or what they do, every day is the worst day of their lives.

I can't understand why anyone would want to watch 8+ seasons of constant misery.

I cant imagine why anyone still watches this show. I went from anticipating every episode, to not caring/watching at all.

Unpopular opinion, Negan killed the show. He jumped the shark. He's the most uninteresting, one-note, cartoon character villain in the shows history. Nobody makes decisions that make sense anymore. The world building with all the different groups kills the shows vibe. Honestly it did the same with the comics too.

As well it should.

This show has become its characters: wandering aimlessly with no hope in sight.

I think I stopped watching with 4 episodes left in season 7 and just can't bring myself to watch them. Last season got really stale for my taste and it doesn't look like season 8 got much better. Doubt I'll pick up again.

Have they killed Tara yet cause she is one of the worst actors on the show. That episode that focused solely on her with the all-female camp nearly killed me.
