At long last, Apple Original Films and Universal Pictures have finally released the first official trailer for Matthew Vaughn's eagerly-awaited razor-witted, reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller Argylle, which, based on the teaser alone, is already shaping up to be one of the most fun releases of 2024.
Based on the synopsis, the film follows Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), "the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle (Henry Cavill) and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.
Accompanied by Aiden (Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur."
The trailer offers plenty of exciting new footage and while it seems like the titular Argylle, played by former Man of Steel star Henry Cavill, will be fictional within the actual film, the trailer does tease a "real Agent Argylle," so there's definitely a lot more yet-to-be-revealed as we're left to wonder if we could see Cavill in a dual role? Either way, if it wasn't already, this should be shooting to the top of your watchlists.
Argylle is expected to be the first in, at least, a trilogy of films, but whether or not future installments depend on box office success or not remains to be seen, especially since its being distributed by Apple, who will undoubtedly take streaming numbers into account, although we'd imagine it'll also perform relatively well at the box office with its star-studded cast likely available to build buzz.
That aforementioned all-star ensemble features Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World Dominion), Academy Award-winner Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2), Henry Cavill (Mission: Impossible - Fallout), John Cena (Peacemaker), Academy Award-winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Grammy-winning pop superstar Dua Lipa (Barbie), Primetime Emmy-winner Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Primetime Emmy-winner Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Rob Delaney (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One), Jing Lusi (Heart of Stone), and Academy Award-nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Secret Invasion).
Argylle hits theaters on February 2, 2024; and will later stream on Apple TV+ at an undetermined date.
