Constantine never really stood a chance at NBC, so its cancellation earlier this year didn't come as a particularly huge surprise. For a time, it appeared as if the series might end up elsewhere, but no one seemed particularly interested in picking it up. Thankfully though, we haven't seen the last of Matt Ryan's take on the fan-favourite character as it was confirmed at the Television Critics Association Press Tour today that the actor is coming to season four of Arrow and will reprise the role in a special one-shot episode. Whether that will lead to something more remains to be seen!
However, we do now know that he'll first appear in episode five (titled "Haunted"). "We are thrilled to have Matt Ryan reprise the role of John Constantine on an upcoming episode of Arrow," says executive producer Marc Guggenheim in the press release. "Matt is an incredibly talented actor and his portrayal of this beloved character was always something we admired. The introduction of magic and mysticism on the show this season has provided a truly organic opportunity for us to bring John Constantine to Arrow and the CW’s DC universe. It will be a well-deserved tip of the hat to all the Constantine fans who were so incredibly supportive of that series." In Arrow, John Constantine is a weather worn exorcist and expert on the supernatural and the occult. He is a detective, magician, and a hunter of demons, and will provide critical support to Oliver (Stephen Amell) when arrows aren't enough. In other words, it's going to be pretty damn awesome!
Stephen Amell actually offered to make a guest appearance on season two of Constantine if a network were to pick it up, and Ryan said at the time that it would be a "real pleasure to explore these guys' dynamic." They're now going to get a chance to do just that, but it will be on Arrow instead! How do you guys feel about these plans for what's sure to be a fun crossover?
