GOTHAM's Renee Montoya, Victoria Cartagena, Will Play A Different Version Of The Character In BATWOMAN

Following the news that Renee Montoya is on her way to Batwoman for season three, it's now been confirmed that Gotham star Victoria Cartagena will star as a new version of the character on The CW...

We recently learned that Batwoman is looking to cast Renee Montoya for its upcoming third season, and Deadline is now reporting that The CW has zeroed in on actress Victoria Cartagena.

If this news sounds somewhat familiar, it's because the actress has already played Renee...in Gotham! However, the two shows aren't set in the same world so Cartagena will be playing a new version of the Gotham City Detective here. She has plenty of other credits to her name, though, including Almost Family, Servant, and Manifest

According to the trade, this take on Montoya "is a former GCPD officer who left the force when she could no longer stomach the corruption inside the GCPD. She now runs the 'freaks division,' which hasn’t seen a lot of action...until now. Righteous and pragmatic, and LGBTQ+, she’s a woman with a very personal (and mysterious) mission to help clean the streets of Gotham in the right way, by whatever means necessary."

Cartagena is going to be a season regular, and she's an undeniably exciting addition to Batwoman

That mention of a "mysterious" mission is interesting, especially as comic book fans will know that Renee's comic book counterpart ultimately becomes a vigilante known as The Question. Gotham's version of the character was romantically involved with Barbara Kean, and only appeared in seven episodes.

Are you excited to see Cartagena take another shot at Renee Montoya on the small screen?

@AndrewHolland - Eh, she was barely in Gotham, so it's not like many would notice.

@KWilly - True, but it still feels odd. Good for her I guess.

@AndrewHolland -
Lazy casting. Especially since Renee Montoya was a cardboard character in Gotham. But then again, this show makes the worst decisions.

This multiverse with some people looking the same and others completely different is confusing

She was good on Gotham, but man is this a downgrade. Series regular on a good show, dropped from that show after 1 season with no send off and now on one of the worst comic shows of recent years.

@dracula - I usually enjoy most Arrowverse stuff but damn Batwoman needs a new showrunner ASAP. The show is a huge misfire. S2 got progressively worse.

@AtakanKaratas - 100% agree. Gave the show 2 seasons to get better. Now its the first Arrowverse show I drop. Best part of the show is Luke Fox, give him a spin off and ill check it out (if it has a different showrunner).

Also has a decent actor for Bruce Wayne. Wouldn't mind seeing him on Superman And Lois. (unlikely to happen but a Batman show with him would be interesting, if it were on par with Superman and lois)

I miss Gotham. Far from perfect show, but had it's fair share of brilliant episodes and stories and was never boring. Plus it knew exactly what it was.

Also despite his age, David Mazouz was great. So was Cameron Bicondova.

@dracula - Gotham had the best depiction of live action Batfamily villains so far. Period.

@LlamaLord - yeah, outside of 1 or 2, they usually nailed characters.

This show definitely needs more lgbtq+ representation

SMH

Aside from Sups and Lois, every CW show has really gone down in quality.

Only quickly glimpsed at the title thinking this was gonna be about the GOTHAM PD show, guess I clicked to quickly.

Imagine if she played Montoya in Birds of Prey as well, lel.

Multi-what? No such thing as parallel Earths!

It's really weird that she only showed up in the first few episodes of Gotham but then never appeared again.

It obviously wasn't a rights issue so it makes you wonder why this was the case.

@Nightwing1015 - I think the audience didn't like that much the way she was written in that brief appearance.
Can't really blame them, with her being portrait as Barbara Kean's obsessed ex, who acts like stalker and lets her personal emotions clearly affect her police work. Montoya deserved better.
They would have had to really write her a new character ark, but they took the easy way and just dropped the character off the face of the earth. Kinda of shame.

@Odin - Too bad they used her right away, really one of the original characters in the later seasons would have been a fine Montoya

@Odin - And what about her partner, he was there for a bit too. But then vanished. And the show never even explained it!

@Nightwing1015 - Same thing happened with Harvey Dent, Tommy Elliot, etc. Gotham went for fan service a lot. If the character didn't work, or add much to the story, they'd just move on.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 7/20/2021, 5:39 PM
@99OPTIMISTPRIME - Well I'd argue they were a different case because they showed up in multiple seasons.

Also, Tommy shouldn't really have had an extended role anyway so it's not notable that he never showed again. Also Dent could've moved on without the GCPD having to mention it. But it's weird when 2 of your main cops vanish and nobody says anything.

Never watched Gotham but this [frick]ing show is a disgrace to the character of Kate Kane.
Reeds2Much
Reeds2Much - 7/20/2021, 2:05 PM
@AtakanKaratas - She's named after a dude that stole credit for Batman and left the real creator to die in poverty and obscurity. The show has nothing on that.
