[Spoiler] Lives? Lanterns Midseason Trailer Spawns Some Believable Theories That Could Rock The DCU

The midseason trailer for Lanterns has left fans with a long list of questions, but we've pieced together some of the clues and all signs now point to Hal Jordan's fate not being what we expected.

Yesterday, HBO and DC Studios released a midseason trailer for Lanterns teasing the final three episodes. All signs point to the series finally getting a little more cosmic before wrapping up, a move that's been welcomed by fans frustrated by Lanterns' Nebraska setting.

What of Hal Jordan? Opinions have been mixed when it comes to the show's handling of the hero, especially as the premiere wrapped up with John Stewart discovering his old mentor's dead body.

In the latest trailer for Lanterns, the 2026 Hal wakes up on the floor—in a setting that looks quite a bit like the slaughterhouse belonging to "Hector Hammond"—and asks, "What are you?" Interestingly, the person standing over him—based on their clothes, at least—looks like another Hal.

Throw in the fact that the Latam Spanish subtitles for Lanterns' fifth episode identified the Hal buried under the rubble in 2016 as "Clone Hal," and it feels like all may not be as it seems with the Green Lantern's apparent demise.

Also telling is the mysterious mark on Hal's arm; when the Manhunter Zoe healed John, she explained that he'd been left with the same mark because she needed a tissue sample to cure him of the severe burns covering his body.

So, Hal has been healed...or resurrected? We remain convinced that Zoe's grandson is at least part-Manhunter, as Kerry confirmed that she has her mother-in-law to thank for her son. If cloning is a possibility—in the boy's case, using genetic material from his mother, father, and grandmother—then there's a strong chance that Hal is resurrected or that his double "dies."

If so, DC Studios may be borrowing from the "Blackest Night" storyline, a famous Green Lantern tale by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis that saw Nekron reanimate dead superheroes. Swap him out for a Manhunter, and you can likely see how this all potentially links up.

There's another clue in the trailer when Sinestro says to John, "Hal didn't have to die in vain. I know a way..." A way to, what, bring him back? As John seemingly breaks the villain out of prison, it does rather feel like we're rocketing towards the formation of the fear-based Sinestro Corps and that the 2016 Hal was infected by fear.

Here's another fun theory for you: what if the consciousness of the 2006 Halogram is somehow merged with Hal's clone, giving us a Hal who was neither jaded nor fearful about losing his ring? John and Guy Gardner can be the DCU's two Green Lanterns in Sector 2814 for now, but the door would be left open to this Hal eventually becoming a Lantern again, hopefully in time for James Gunn's potential adaptation of The New Frontier

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Four episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max.

I am an emotionally stunted child-man and therefore I cannot comprehend the idea of a superhero dying. I will look for clues as to why he is not dead. If comics has taught me anything it's that death isn't real, it's certainly not permanent, most of the time she's actually hot AF and we don't have to worry it about it ever. You might tell me that it's actually a real thing irl and we're all mortal and are going to die someday but I will put my fingers in my ears and say LALALALALA because death is not real and is not coming for me or you or any superhero that I like.

Hal Jordan Lives.

@Malatrova15 - Don;t worry, "emotionally stunted man-child" is a pipeline to MAGA. At least until they realize the lower gas prices, lower grocery prices, DOGE Dividend check, the Tariff Refund check, and Midterms GOP Victory check are never coming.

But at least those million deportations have lowered your rent and raised your wages enough that you can afford the 67% YOY grocery price increase, right? Right?

@ItsAllOurBlood - I understood everything up to the word MAGA. Everything else sounded like double dutch to me. Don't know what ANY of that means at all. So I'm voting for President Donlald "The Duck" Trump on my next ballot. Your logic is too sound to ignore.

My problem with this show is how Hal Jordan has been written. They have apparently bad him a bad person. If that can be explained by him being infected with fear and they have a redemption, it's fine. I just don't like how they have torn Hal down to build up John. It feels unnecessary and is an insult to the character of Hal Jordan.

@hainesy - thats what they did in the comics , they turned him into a monster and propped up Kyle rayner

@hainesy - Does John actually feel propped up at the EXPENSE or Hal Jordan? Both of these guys seem like they are seriously flawed in different ways that one doesn't come at the cost of the other.

Well, if Hal lives and is still a GL, I’ll feel a lot better.

But it still doesn’t make up for how horribly they disrespected these two great heroes.

@InfinitePunches - well let's see, they could be using Darkest Night as mentioned in article, or there could be some Rebirth where he became part of Parallax. There is bits of the Hal from Secret Origins specifically with the manhunters. The comics also had a run where it was very terrestrial, I do not remember the actual comic series or numbers. There is plenty of reference to existing Hal in the comics

@tluciotti74 - Alright, let's see.

In Darkest Knight: the elseworld story where Batman joins the Green Lantern Corps... I don't think I see much influence there... Unless you meant Blackest Night, which Josh theorizes MAY inspire some future episodes, but hasn't as of yet. So 0/1 so far.

Parallax hasn't even been mentioned, so that's also just a theory as of now. 0/2

Secret Origins doesn't have manhunters appear at all, that was Atrocitus, so I guess you haven't read that one. 0/3

And I think you're probably referring to Hard Traveling Heroes for that last one. Which you didn't even know the name of, so I'm guessing your knowledge of that goes as far as it takes place on Earth. Though none of those are mysteries, they do deal with themes of race and feature John's first appearance, so I'll give you half credit. 0.5/4

Not bad for someone who has no idea what they're talking about.

@InfinitePunches - Sorry for typing the wrong comic, oh no!! Really...Secret Origin does not have manhunters? How about the story of wiping out Sector 666 leading to the birth of the Five Inversions. Was Hal not dead in Rebirth because of the fear and becoming Parallax and resurrected to his own body? Just because they do not have Parallax does not mean they did not take the fear, death, and resurrection! And no, I did not read the Hard Traveling Heros because I did not read Green Lantern in the 70s, I read green lantern from about 1999 to 2008, Secret Origin was the last run I collected. You do realize that all of these are theories but we can see pieces of stories, not a one for one re-telling.

My theory is that Sinestro was the one who hid Zoe not Abin sur( doesn’t make sense why a good lantern like him would just release an apocalyptic war criminal in a lower planet) and also killed him since when Zoe is confronted about killing him she has this reaction that implies there’s way more to the story. Sinestro is clearly in cahoots with lyanna which would explain how he knows about John since Lyanna has been watching him since he was a baby. Lyanna wanted Jordan out to also pave the way for Sinestro’s return whom John probably isn’t ready to face yet. Macon mentions that he met Zoe when she was her nurse and in the Spanish dub he keeps referring to the benefactor as a HE and makes the distinction that he met his benefactor and Zoe so Sinestro and/or Lyanna are said benefactors using advanced Qward tech with guardian tech I believe the planet in which John and Sinestro seem to meet is Qward and with Hal losing his ring and (almost?) getting killed it would make him vulnerable to seduction by Sinestro who values Hal as his protege.

They’ve really done Hal Jordan dirty on this show. And I like Aaron Pierre, but can’t help but to wonder if someone else would’ve been better in that role. Shit is weird. Maybe both characters are just written poorly.
