PENNYWORTH: Batman Prequel Series Adds Emma Paetz As Martha Kane And Jessica Ellerby As The Queen

Epix's upcoming Batman prequel series Pennyworth has added Emma Paetz (Gentleman Jack) as the future mother of Bruce Wayne, and Jessica Ellerby (Lovesick) as a character known only as "The Queen"...

We recently got our first official look at Jack Bannon as the younger incarnation of Batman's loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth, and now Deadline reports that the upcoming Epix series has added two more key players.

Emma Paetz (Gentleman Jack) will take on the series regular role of Martha Kane (eventual wife of Thomas and mother of Bruce, Martha Wayne); while Jessica Ellerby (Lovesick) will recur as The Queen. No details on this character are provided, but there's a chance she'll be a take on Green Arrow villain Isabel Rochev.

We still don't know a whole lot about this R-rated origin story, but it has been confirmed that Alfred will team-up with Thomas Wayne to form a security company in 1960s London. No established Batman baddies will appear, but the show is expected to feature "archetypal villains and classic villains of British literature."

I'm actually excited about this, as long as it doesn't have anything to do with the Alfred from Gotham, "mate".

@Asturgis - I actually really like alfred in Gotham. I think he is great. Of all the campy characters that show has, I find he, along with Gordon are the 2 that keep it somewhat as grounded as it can be.
and my GF HATES it when I call her mate. She thinks im friend zoning her...'dont tempt me' I tell her

@AFriendFromWork - I think the actor is doing his very best, but the writers have put him through so much cringey moments, like punching Bruce or doing absurd fighting scenes that I really have trouble liking the character. Also, saying mate, why not, but calling Bruce "mate" sometimes is really out of character.

Same with Bruce, actually. He's been very likable, then they decided he would act like an absolute little shit for too many episodes, and I couldn't really come back from it either. As for Gordon, I just think the actor (I'd rather say that than spell his name wrong) is absolutely terrible. To think Morena Baccarin married him baffles me. Also cannot stand Selina nor Barbara. But all of this is just personal taste.

The 2 things IMO the show has portrayed incredibly is most of its villains, from Freeze to Penguin, Nigma, Joker, Firefly, Tetch and above all Professor Pyg. The latter truly deserves a place on the big screen. And the second is the city itself. From the GCPD to the bars, the streets, Arkham, the dirty alleys, the rooftops, Wayne manor… It really feels like Gotham. For those 2 things I think the show deserves incredible praise.

The Queen suggests they might be doing a Checkmate story! We definitely need a good spy series right now. Maybe they can toss in Leviathan, Spiral, and Blackhawks for good measure.

While I'm not opposed to more DC content and plan on checking this out, I will say that DC/WB often act as if they're in the position Marvel was in where they just don't have access to all their characters, when they in fact have them all, at their disposal, at any time. That said I do understand they have other projects on the horizon, but the Batman Superman prequel well has played out it's welcome IMO. If it's good, then great, but it's just a bit annoying.

I think, that if they take some Batman villains, they should pick really old and lesser known ones, like Alfred Stryker or Dr Death
