PENNYWORTH: THE ORIGIN OF BATMAN'S BUTLER Trailer Ushers In An Era Of Psychedelic Supervillains

HBO Max has debuted the first trailer for season 3 of Pennyworth, and after a 5-year time-jump, Alfred finds himself facing a psychedelic new threat and the imminent emergence of supervillains...

We recently learned that the upcoming third season of Epix's Pennyworth has been given the hilariously direct subtitle "The Origin of Batman's Butler," and HBO Max has now released the first full trailer.

After a five-year time-jump, the show is clearly taking full advantage of its swinging sixties setting by thrusting Alfred into a plot involving psychedelic drugs which ultimately result in madness. A precursor to the Scarecrow's Fear Gas, perhaps? It's not spelled out here, but we'd say it's a strong possibility.

After two (relatively) grounded seasons, Pennyworth seems to be ushering in an era of supervillains. We don't see any familiar faces in this trailer, but there is a shot of a guy shooting electricity from what appear to be some sort of gauntlets (several DC Comics baddies could fit the bill). Plus, right at the end, ol' Alfred is handed one of The Dark Knight's signature tools of the trade.

Check out the teaser below along with some new key art.

“Season three of the psychological thriller begins after a five-year time jump: the civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse – ushering in a new age of Super Heroes and Supervillains.”

Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler stars Jack Bannon, Ben Aldridge, Emma Paetz, Paloma Faith, Ryan Fletcher, Dorothy Atkinson, Ramon Tikaram, Harriet Slater, and Simon Manyonda. Season 3 is set to premiere on HBO Max on October 6.

Never found Alfred so interesting that I wanted to see what he did before Batman. In fact I’ve never cared about what Alfred did while working with Batman. Where the f is Batman?

@slickrickdesigns - Gotham covered Alfred's origins in one episode. That's all that's needed.

I know that the concept of “Guy Fawkes masks” goes back to the 1800s, but they didn’t look like the one from “V for Vendetta”. Weird to see DC use it for Pennyworth.

This guy. I actually think it’s a good series. The first 2 seasons were great, really cool London set pieces back in the 60’s. And the dude who plays Alfred is great. The fact that it’s got connection to Batman is just a bonus imo. But really it’s a show about a dude who’s kindve a fixer for hire. And gets into all sorts of espionage shenanigans. But it’s a decent show, that’s why there’s 3 seasons

@Tpo81 - I feel like the premise of the show is strong enough to survive on it's own and all the efforts the writers are making to remind the audience this is Batman related are only holding the show back.
