We recently learned that the upcoming third season of Epix's Pennyworth has been given the hilariously direct subtitle "The Origin of Batman's Butler," and HBO Max has now released the first full trailer.
After a five-year time-jump, the show is clearly taking full advantage of its swinging sixties setting by thrusting Alfred into a plot involving psychedelic drugs which ultimately result in madness. A precursor to the Scarecrow's Fear Gas, perhaps? It's not spelled out here, but we'd say it's a strong possibility.
After two (relatively) grounded seasons, Pennyworth seems to be ushering in an era of supervillains. We don't see any familiar faces in this trailer, but there is a shot of a guy shooting electricity from what appear to be some sort of gauntlets (several DC Comics baddies could fit the bill). Plus, right at the end, ol' Alfred is handed one of The Dark Knight's signature tools of the trade.
Check out the teaser below along with some new key art.
“Season three of the psychological thriller begins after a five-year time jump: the civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse – ushering in a new age of Super Heroes and Supervillains.”
Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler stars Jack Bannon, Ben Aldridge, Emma Paetz, Paloma Faith, Ryan Fletcher, Dorothy Atkinson, Ramon Tikaram, Harriet Slater, and Simon Manyonda. Season 3 is set to premiere on HBO Max on October 6.
