Variety is reporting that Primetime Emmy-nominee Joel McHale has joined the cast of the DC Universe's upcoming Stargirl series in a recurring role as Sylvester Pemberton, a.k.a. Starman.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, his character is being described as the Golden Age version. A courageous and confident Super Hero, Starman is a member of the Justice Society of America – DC’s original Super Hero team. Starman wields a mysterious anti-gravity weapon called the Cosmic Staff. His longtime partner is his sidekick, Stripesy, better known as Courtney Whitmore’s (Brec Bassinger) stepfather, Pat Dugan.

McHale is best known for his role as Jeff Winger on NBC's Community and his past credits also include, but are not limited to, Spider-Man 2, Ted, Deliver Us from Evil, Adult Beginners, Assassination Nation, The X-Files, Santa Clarita Diet, The Happytime Murders, and Game Over, Man.

The series itself follows Courtney as she inspires that unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past, and aims to reimagine Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in what promises to be an unpredictable series. Stargirl focuses on the character that started executive producer Geoff Johns’ career as a comic book writer when he created her in 1999, and was lovingly inspired by his late sister, who was killed in a 1996 plane explosion.

I've always thought he looked like Kirk Cameron's more talented, less batshit-crazy twin brother.

I figured he'd nab a comic book role sooner, rather than later. He has been auditioning for every superhero role under the sun.

He'll be a good Starman.

Damn I was hoping he’d be the Jack Knight version but I guess they didn’t wanna do the Star Spangled Kid.

This is great news. Sad that netflix canceled his show.

By the way, bring on a Batman show please. Give the movies a rest.

I'm usually pretty open minded, but this casting is way off. Jack Knight is supposed to be the embodiment of gen x. Complete disinterest in society at large and basically a hoarder. I don't see this guy pulling it off.

He would, however, be perfect as Starman's brother who takes on the mantle and dies (iirc) in the first issue.

He was actually my choice for Deadpool back in the day. Kinda still is.

@TheNZNatural - I remember thinking a while back if the rights reverted and Marvel didn't want Ryan Reynolds back that Joel McHale would've been my pick to replace him too.

Having said that, I still want Ryan back. If any character can be rebooted into a new universe with the same actor, it's Deadpool. They'd have a field day with the Fourth Wall if that happened.

Um, no, Ted Knight's the Golden Age Starman, founding JSA member.

This guy was the Star-Spangled Kid.
