STARGIRL Actor Henry Thomas Reveals Why He's Not On The Lookout For Another Superhero Role (Exclusive)

Henry Thomas (E.T., Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) played Dr. Mid-Nite and Chuck in The CW's Stargirl, but tells us why he isn't necessarily on the hunt for another superhero role after his stint in the DCU.

Henry Thomas will be best known to many of you for his iconic role in E.T. and his recent horror work alongside filmmaker Mike Flanagan. Earlier this year, he stole the show in Netflix's The Fall of the House of Usher and now returns to that realm with Paramount's Pet Sematary: Bloodlines

The movie, which is based on the untold chapter from Stephen King's bone-chilling novel Pet Sematary, follows a young Jud Crandall in 1969. Serving as a prequel to the original story, Thomas plays Jud's father, Dan, as part of a cast which also includes Forrest Goodluck, Jack Mulhern, Natalie Alyn Lind, Pam Grier, and David Duchovny.

We had the good fortune to catch up with Henry last week to discuss his role in Lindsey Beer's horror prequel and made sure to ask whether he'd be open to another superhero project. The actor played the original Dr. Mid-Nite in The CW series Stargirl and later lent his voice to "Chuck," Dr. McNider's artificial intelligence.

Despite briefly suiting up in the DC Universe, however, the Pet Sematary: Bloodlines star admits the genre isn't one that's calling out to him.

"Well, you know, I’ve just come off strike and I need a job. I’m not going to say no [Laughs]," he jokingly responds in the video above. "I do have to admit, I’m not really - and never have been - crazy about the superhero genre. I do appreciate it and I liked comic books when I was a kid a bit, but I never really got into it."

"I feel like it’s become the Western for our age. It’s this overplayed genre," Thomas admits. "I know it’s gotten a lot of flak as not being real cinema and all this [Laughs] which, arguably so, but it is entertainment and people have responded to those things. That’s what we’re meant to be doing, anyway, but at the same time, I would like to see something new."

"I would like to see a revival of historical genre films or maybe mainstream fantasy. It would be cool. There are a lot of stories that can be told which haven’t been yet."

It seems the actor's brief stint as part of the DC Universe did little to sell him on a genre that, in recent years, has become increasingly divisive. As much as we'd love to see him in the MCU or the new DCU, the actor isn't keen...still, in the meantime, we'd strongly recommend checking out his work in Pet Sematary: Bloodlines!

You can watch the trailer below. We'll also be sharing our full conversation with Henry a little later today!

In 1969, young Jud Crandall dreams of leaving his hometown behind, but soon discovers sinister secrets buried within and is forced to confront a dark family history that forever binds him to Ludlow.  Banding together, Jud and his childhood friends must fight an ancient evil that has gripped the town since its founding, and once unearthed has the power to destroy everything in its path.

Find out why sometimes dead is better when the terrifying prequel Pet Sematary: Bloodlines arrives to buy on Digital December 5, 2023 and debuts on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD December 19 from Paramount Home Entertainment.

@BlackStar25 - This one is a prequel. It went direct to Paramount+. Looks it too, reminds me of the all the Dimension Studios DTV sequels from the late 90's and early 2000's(From Dusk Till Dawn 2 and 3, Children of the Corn 2+, etc).

Too bad he won't be remembered for anything other than Stargirl.

Definitely the highest visibility role of his career. Oh well.

My response to this complaint is always, what's stopping these other types of movies from being written, and made?🤣 Going forward, I don't want anyone who doesn't like the superhero genre, to be involved in it. Directors and actors who aren't into it, should not be able to profit off of it.

Can't believe you recommended pet cemetery "bloodlines". Due was awesome in Fall of the House of Usher or every other Mike Flanagan movie or series. But Bloodlines was terrible

If you weren't old as dirt maybe you could understand the certain nuances 'superhero' films take.
Yes, there are still fluff pieces. But there a lot of superheroes that just wanna change the world. Even if it's bit by bit

He doesn't need another superhero role because Flanagan is casting him in every new horror project he is involved in.

Seems that he fared much better in the Fall of the House of Usher series than in this sequel that came out two months ago to unfavourable reviews unfortuantely, that sucks but at least Mike Flanagan seems to have managed to help him deliver a strong performance in the former, so career-wise speaking that's good for him.

I remember him briefly as the first actor that played Charles McNider aka Doctor Mid-Nite, but that short-lived role is still memorable enough for him because it was in the action-packed series opening of the show with the fall of the JSA against the ISA 10 years before the main story began.

He must've had schedule conflicts that led to forfeit the role so he didn't return as Charles McNider in Season 2 where his story would've been picked up in the Shadowlands. (The role went to Alex Collins)

But again, he'll be remembered at least for also having his own JSA poster in the old JSA hideout from the 3rd episode. He looked badass in it.

And IDK why it just happens that we get a Stargirl related article published this week when it's officially a year after it ended on December 7th...coincidence? Destiny? Accident? Fate? Maybe I'm (over)thinking it too much but I still am cautiously holding onto hope and want the show to be the exception that it gets it's revival under the DC Elseworlds label/banner because not only was it SO good and another proof that a comic book writer can translate his work from the pages to the screen when they're in charge (Neil Gaiman already showed it with Good Omens and with The Sandman) but also because it's a earnest coming-of-age supehero story about balancing the light and the darkness with the JSA and the ISA legacies that did something no other IP in the genre has done: make the heroes and villains work together to stop actual worse threats through the new generation. That's dope and bold and awesome at the same time.

Great themes, good twists, solid storytelling, relatable characters and relationships and sick action scenes. (The stunt coordinator apparently will work in Blade so watch out for that)

And it's not like Gunn and Safran have any plans for these characters in their early Chapters, they're just sitting collecting dust in the shelves, again.

It deserves it!
