Last year, we learned that Superman & Lois takes place in its own reality, and not the world that's affectionately become known as the "Arrowverse." That was evident when a very different John Diggle showed up, and while the creative decision has disappointed many fans, it's allowed The CW series to do its own thing.
Now, in some recently resurfaced Tweets from Supergirl star Jon Cryer, the actor confirms he will not play Lex Luthor in the upcoming third season (which premieres on March 13).
"I'm not sure I could’ve played Lex on [Superman & Lois] even if they wanted to do this," the Two and a Half Men alum said, responding to a fan. "I'm supposed to start shooting a new series for NBC in February."
"And for the record, the folks at DC were very cool and gave me a heads up that the show was going a different way with [the] character before they started looking," Cryer added, noting the villain will be recast. "Most of the time, actors learn about this stuff when it comes out in the trades. I'm grateful they were classy about it."
There's no word on who will play Superman & Lois' Lex, and it's a shame the series is moving on from Cryer when he did such a great job in the Arrowverse. The actor matched wits with Tyler Hoechlin's Man of Steel during Crisis on Infinite Earths, so it's a shame they won't be reunited here.
With The CW winding down its DC Comics adaptations and DC Studios looking to start over with the new "DCU," we expect the show to end with season 3, anyway. With that in mind, it makes sense to wrap this story up by having Superman once again face his greatest enemy.
