The first footage from Netflix's upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman just debuted during the online TUDUM event, and while it doesn't reveal a whole lot about the story, fans of the comic books should be very happy with this brief introduction to Dream's world.

The teaser begins with black magician Roderick Burgess performing a ritual to capture and bind the Grim Reaper. Unfortunately for him and everyone present, he ends up imprisoning someone far more dangerous: Death's younger brother, Dream.

During his introduction, Gaiman confirmed that the voice we hear belongs to The Corinthian, an escaped nightmare who wreaks havoc in the Waking World as a sadistic serial killer.

Check out the promo below along with character posters for Dream, Death and Desire, and let us know what you think.

The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Game of Thrones alum Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Logan actor Boyd Holbrook as sadistic escaped nightmare The Corinthian, Vivienne Acheampong (The Witches) as The Dreaming's loyal custodian Lucienne, Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) as black magician Roderick Burgess, and Asim Chaudhry (Black Mirror) and Sanjeeve Bhaskar (Yesterday) as Abel and Cain, respectively.

We recently learned that Desire and Despair will be played by Mason Alexander Park and Donna Preston, respectively, while Joely Richardson will play Ethel Cripps, and David Thewlis will take on the role of her son John Dee, aka the deranged Dr. Destiny. Jenna Coleman will play John Constantine's great-great-great grandmother, Lady Johanna Constantine.

The 11-episode first season of The Sandman is expected to adapt the first arc of the Vertigo comics series, "Preludes and Nocturnes," which finds Dream captured by a black magician and held prisoner for the better part of a century. When he finally escapes, he sets about recovering three very important items, encountering Lucifer, John Constantine, Doctor Destiny, Martian Manhunter and more on his travels.

Gaiman is developing the show along with David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg. No premiere date has been set.

Sturridge sounds like he has bodies in his basement lol.

Looks interesting. Hope Netflix doesn’t botch this.

Was hoping the hair would be a little crazier, and the skin would be a little paler. Definitely looks like they didn't spare any expenses at least.

Hope this turns out good. Netflix has had shoddy luck with comic/manga adaptations, but Sweet Tooth was great.

Hmm…I thought there would be some special effects added to his look..but it still looks interesting.

Wish this was on HBO and it looked closer to the source, but I guess I'll wait to watch it and then judge if it's good or not, though after what Netflix has done with other shows my hopes are low.

I give you a coin made from stone,
I give you a song I stole from the dirt,
I give you a knife from under the hills and a stick that I stuck through a dead man's eye,

I give you a claw I ripped from a rat,
I give you a name, and the name is lost,

I give you the blood from out of my vein, and a feather I pulled from an angel's wing,

I call you with names O Lord,
I summon with poison and summon with pain,
I open the way and I open the gates,

I summon you in the name of the old lords:
Namtar,
Allatu,
Morax,
Naberius,
Klesh,
Vepar,
Maymon...
We summon,

Ashema-Deva calls you,
Maborym calls you,
Horvendile calls you,
From the dark they call youo,
Into the dark they call you,

Coin and Song,
Knife and Stick,
Claw and Name,
Blood and Feather,

Here in the darkness,

We Summon You, Together.

I was hoping for something a little more artsy and atmospheric. This looks like a very conventional magic/fantasy series and a lot of the colours are muted. Dream also looks like a Twilight vampire.

Still, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt until it comes out.

Kidding aside, I know next to nothing about this property but that tease got me intrigued. The cast looks solid and production value crisp. I'll check this out.

Could go either way, honestly. Like, the teaser is literally a shortened version of the very first scene in the comics

It's looking fantastic! But I wish they gave us a proper trailer rather than an abridged version of the cold open of episode 1, with that lame voicer-over.

I know set photos showed us they weren't going chalk white for Dream and Death, but it's till disappointing to see it. Is it the angle or does Death not have her iconic tattoo?

I have been a Sandman fan since 93-94. I have been looking forward to a live action adaptation for years and I have to say this was disappointing. Why didn’t they enhance Dream’s look with makeup and / or special effects? His character poster looks like Twilight. Not a fan of the Death casting either. They should have gone for a more comic accurate look.
