It's been a while since we've had any updates on Netflix's highly-anticipated adaptation of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, but thanks to the latest issue of Empire Magazine, we finally have a new official still from the upcoming series.

The image gives us another look at Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, as well as our first glimpse of Vivienne Acheampong (The Witches) as The Dreaming's loyal custodian, Lucienne (Lucien in the comics). The shot appears to be taken from a scene which sees the Dream King return to his realm after being held prisoner for over a century, only to find The Dreaming is a state of disrepair.

A premiere date has yet to be announced, but there are whispers that a full trailer could be with us soon, so stay tuned!

The Sandman also stars Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Game of Thrones alum Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Logan actor Boyd Holbrook as sadistic escaped nightmare The Corinthian, Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) as black magician Roderick Burgess, and Asim Chaudhry (Black Mirror) and Sanjeeve Bhaskar (Yesterday) as Abel and Cain, respectively.

We recently learned that Desire and Despair will be played by Mason Alexander Park and Donna Preston, respectively, while Joely Richardson will play Ethel Cripps, and David Thewlis will take on the role of her son John Dee, aka the deranged Dr. Destiny. Jenna Coleman will play John Constantine's great-great-great grandmother, Lady Johanna Constantine.

The 11-episode first season of The Sandman is expected to adapt the first arc of the Vertigo comics series, "Preludes and Nocturnes."

Ooh I dig, I just hope it follows the material closer than American Gods did.

@bobevanz -

I genuinely wanted to like American Gods, but man I just felt bored.
I did enjoy the book though

@SimplyAz - I definitely gave American Gods a heathy try. I even watched all of it & there was some decent stuff in the show I liked but overall it just kinda missed the mark. Mad Sweeney was great on the show, but I wasn’t surprised when then gave the show the axe

@Tpo81 - I loved the first season but as soon as fuller left it all went to hell...
Gotta live that starz is still using American gods to promote their channel/streaming service even after they canceled it

@Tpo81 -

Oh cool, you got much further than I did.
I got up to the end of season 1, the Easter episode and then tried again with the next episode but it didn't work for me.

Mad Sweeney was definitely the most interesting character

@bobevanz - I guarantee you this adaptation is going to be as close to the source material as it can get. It's going to be unbelievable.

@lvcl - Are you really triggered by changing the skin colour and gender of a character whose skin colour and gender don't give anything to the story? Your life must be sad, I feel sorry for you. :( Especially because you won't be able enjoy one of the best comic book adaptations ever.

Neil Gaiman is literally running the show, so of course it will be.

@AndrewHolland - That’s really been my issue tbh. Nothing I’ve seen makes him look brooding. Hoping for the best though.

Those sure are the characters, looking correctly and standing in an empty spot of the Dreaming. I hope we get a proper trailer soon.
