George R.R. Martin's Original 1993 GAME OF THRONES Outline Was Drastically Different

A leaked document from 1993 reveals George R.R. Martin's original plans for the Song of Ice and Fire saga. Find out who was originally supposed to live, die and fall in love. Spoiler Warning

A leaked letter from George R. R. Martin's publisher reveals what the author originally intended for his Game of Thrones saga.  Originally the Song of Ice and Fire saga was only meant to be a trilogy and only Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow and Arya and Bran Stark were meant to survive. Here are some other notable changes:

+Arya and Bran were originally meant to flee with their mother, Catelyn Stark when their father his killed by Joffrey.
+Robb Stark originally was meant to kill King Joffrey to avenge his father.
+Arya and her half-brother Jon Snow were meant to fall in love, though they would never act on their feeling.  Later in the series, Tyrion Lannister was also meant to fall for Arya as opposed to her sister, Sansa.
+Sansa actually marries Joffrey in this bizarro version and they have a child together.
+In this earlier version, Daenerys Targaryen is actually upset that Khal Drogo kills her brother, Viserys and exacts her revenge before beginning a siege on the Seven Kingdoms.

In closing lines of the letter, Martin wrote, “I hope you will find some editors who are as excited about all of this as I am. Feel free to share this letter with anyone who wants to know how the story will go."  Obviously, a lot of the original story has changed in the last 22 years.  However, it should be interesting to note that all of the characters originally meant to survive by story's end are still alive in the current series.  Perhaps that's the one element of the story that's remained constant?

If you want to read the letters for yourself, head over to Tumblr (but you should probably hurry).  Game of Thrones kicks off its fifth season on April 12, 2015 on HBO.

One of those is kind of ambiguous as to being alive or not at the end of ADWD.

Without the story in context, and the drastic difference from what it currently is, of course it is strange.

If you read the letter it says that Jon and Arya do hook up after his parentage is revealed... Kind of makes sense if he is half targaryen and also sort of plays off the Lannister thing making the Starks kind of hypocrites in a sense.

Its worrying people enjoy this show, especially when it has things like a twin brother raping his twin sister next to the corpse of their deceased love-child...

Personally i just find that sort of thing messed up, yet for some reason people still enjoy watching the show for aspects such as that.

^ Do you watch the show? There's a lot more to it than sex scenes, but people tend to latch onto that stuff because the intricacies of the plot go over their heads.

Also, I don't remember anyone saying they enjoyed that particular scene. It got a lot of criticism because it deviated from the books and seemed to be out of character.

Hmmm...definitely some interesting ideas.

All that matters is the age of the actress, and Emilia Clarke is 28.

Could be, but there's been depictions of underage sex with nudity in various movies. Not exactly sure of the laws, but I believe it's fine.

Yup, a large percentage of the viewers definitely juuuust watches this show because of stuff like that. I sure do. It's the only way I can get a funny tingling in my pants.

"Its worrying people enjoy this show, especially when it has things like a twin brother raping his twin sister next to the corpse of their deceased love-child... "

Given that this is the first scene in the series, and what most of the show is built around, its obviously what brings people back week to week.

And also, no, it is not illegal for underage characters. Just the actual age of the actor.

theres a sort of divine prostitution going on through the red priests.
the sex scenes arent pointless, nor is adding characters like roz the prostitute.

in the books all the kids start off as younger, for the show they added 2 years to everyone If im not mistaken.
its kind of a continuity error as they did not change the time of roberts rebellion, but you didnt hear that from me.

theres a theme of ressurrection going on aswell, so just because someone "dies" it doesnt mean they don't come back similar to Beric.

bran died from his fall,
Davos drowned,
Jamie died from blood poisoning after his hand was cut off
Ned stark died from being tossed off his horse (in the books)
they all came back to life via the three eyed crow and the weirwoods.
"the tree of life"

its interesting on this note to point out all the major keeps in westeros are layed out in an exact Kabbalah pattern. the kabbalah is also called the tree of life..

Not sure about the rules in cable but I remember that news about Glee--underaged characters sexualized though the actors playing them are in their 20s or 30s.

"Robb Stark originally was meant to kill King Joffrey"

That should of happened and Ned Stark should not have been killed off.

Okay.

Some guesses here.

Daenerys gets control of her dragons, and they fly west with her army on Victarion's ships.

The three dragon riders are Daenerys, Tyrion, and ARYA.

The "invasion" currently underway is snuffed out.

The Obyrons ally with Daenerys.

The White Walker army overwhelms The Wall and The North and moves south, chasing Jon Snow.

Jon Snow becomes a dragon rider, replacing one of the three.

Just guesses.

Beginning to have concerns, suspicions, and doubts on whether this story ever even gets finished. This could be HBO's "Carnival" nightmare all over again! And just to be clear I'm talking about the books.

spoiler drogo isnt dead and niether is danys baby, they are dragons. the dragon eggs all needed souls added to them to come to life.
hence why they added the vision for tv stating "drogo has not entered the nightlands yet"

the heads of the dragon are khal drogo, her baby and a wolf (probably ned stark)
I think from read a world of ice and fire all past dragons all had horse minds which made them ridable, similar to Hodor.
these ones will not have riders. they will have to be warged into if anything.

an interesting fact is that the dragons were evolved through magic after fiding fireworms at the 14 flames, and most of the later incarnations like the black goat of yiti, wyverns or the sea dragon nagga are all gradual evolutions of the dragon.
crazy revelations are coming in the show and books, then people will have to re read or re watch everything to understand the real underlying context.

@bropous
dorne and the north will unite, dragons and white walkers will unite..
jon snow and daenarys will unite.

the song of ice and fire is about opposites teaming up,
for ragnarok.

@Carl, good stuff I had no idea! I'm one third through the fifth book purposely taking my time trying coordinate with HBO. I like your method of thinking. Did you get this information from a source or is it based on your intuition. Sounds like you know what you're talking about, I'm genuinely interested in your thoughts!

between asoiaf wikis, the books, mythology and a world of ice and fire I have collectively come to these conclusions.
its a lot of reading.

this is a great general wiki for people starting out, but a world of ice and fire expanded on things greatly even though its again, point of view from a maester.

BrydenBFish's theories of what Daenerys does in TWOW is good.

*SPOILERS*
To any readers here, for TWOW which one do you anticipate more? The battle for Winterfell or Meereen (I reckon that will be the Field of Fire 2.0)?

@DocDangerous

It should be interesting to see if the characters that GRRM envisioned as surviving will make it. One of the series' main themes is that nobody is safe and any character could be facing death at any time.

It leads one to wonder who, if anyone, will make it out alive. Wouldn't it be ironic if Jon Snow- the illegitimate son of Ned- ends up outliving the other males in the Stark family? Of course, there is a lot of speculation as to what his fate at A Dance With Dragons is. Still, there is the possibility of Bran playing a major role in the last books. Dunno as to what will become of Rickon.

Then again, this is George R.R. Martin we're talking about….. nobody is safe.
