I know Miller and Mazzucchelli worked together on Batman Year One, but I always thought Born Again was way better.

That is a great list but I would add Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr. run top to that list. Though it was a fun read I would remove the Batman/Daredevil book.

@VisualMaximus

I don't care what their opinion is of the show but I'm not sure why more people aren't laughing at "Olicity".

Stopped watching when he said the movie "Was the best one they could have made at the time."

In NO time in filmmaking history was such atrocious dialogue, terrible acting, and even worse directing "the best" ANY one could do. Wow.

@Phlegmbot as bad as Daredevil was there are movies that are a lot worse movies. The Roger Corman Fantastic Four and The 1990 Captain America movie come to mind.

That being said the only thing I really liked about the Daredevil movie was Ben Affleck as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Despite the script and direction being terrible he performance was really good depending on what he had to work with. I will also add I think Jennifer Garner is a great actress but she was all wrong for the role of Elecktra. I think she was chosen for the fact that at the time Alias was doing so well.

I like in this order,

5. Nocentis last storyline where Matt had amnesia, and Bullseye was Daredevil, never heard a title for this run. Jrjr was the artists, it was in the 280s of the line.

4. Electra saga

3. Man without fear

2. Born Again

1. Roulette

People who say the Director's Cut is better is the equivalent of saying new Ninja Turtles is better than Transformers -- being better than crap doesn't mean anything.

@SWelch - totally agree w/you about the other movies being worse. But, surely that doesn't give the DD movie a pass on being bad? I mean, having your character try to be a badass by saying "That light at the end of the tunnel...it's the D train!" is just sad.

I also agree about Garner. Like Katie Holmes in BB, it wasn't her fault she was miscast, and she did the best she could do.

Affleck, however, I don't agree with. Sorry, but I just felt the whole time he came off a bit...well, effeminate. The tougher he tried to act, the more I thought he seemed like he s/b in The Village People ('70s reference!). It's also why I don't like him as Batman. Affleck does affable guys REALLY well. But tough guys? Not so far (imo).

That all said, I'm on ep. 5 of DD on Netflix. I like it a lot, but I sure hope that the whiny b!tch Wilson Fisk we've met turns into the stoic tough-guy we all know. =]

SWelch - 4/17/2015, 8:27 PM
@Phlegmbot The line about the D train again can contributed to bad writing. Remember the actor is only doing what the director tells him or her to do And the same can be said of his performance but despite that I think he was the only good thing about the movie.

I will say I think it would have done better if they used the directors cut. One of the producers said they felt the audience wouldn't like a longer movie. Which translates to "the audience is stupid and we have to dumb it down" It shouldn't matter how long a movie is as long it is well written(which DD wasn't), well acted(which it was wasn't but that was more due to miscasting) and well directed(which, again it wasn't).
Phlegmbot
Phlegmbot - 4/19/2015, 3:18 PM
@Swelch - Heya. Well, clearly, based on my example, I'm aware of the difference between bad writing and bad acting. I do feel DD suffered from both.

Granted, there ARE indeed perfs that are bad BECAUSE of the director (look at Portman and Christiansen in Star Wars -- both of whom have had great perfs in other movies [see Life as a House]).

Also, I forget the other movies where Affleck was a badass...was it The Town? Or his lesser films like Reindeer Games? Changing Lanes? I forget. Putting aside the other merits (or lack thereof) of these movies, anytime he plays tough guys, I just giggle at him. I just don't think it's in him to do it. (The recent BvS trailer supports this.)

The same director's Ghost Rider and Elektra movies suffer from the exact same problems -- nonsensical plot, childish storytelling, poor dialogue, bad acting, etc. That said, I WILL try and give the Director's Cut a shot sometime. But I've little hope. ;]

SWelch
SWelch - 4/19/2015, 7:35 PM
@Phlegmbot I think the BvS trailer really didn't show enough to say if he will be a good or bad Batman. Loved him in the Town and Reindeer Games. I was underwhelmed by the trailer but that was due more to my feelings as Snyder as a director. I think the only movie I liked by him was 300.
Phlegmbot
Phlegmbot - 4/26/2015, 7:13 PM
@Swelch - I disagree re: the trailer. If that's really how BM's voice is gonna be, well, as many others have said on numerous threads, it just sounds like someone is trying too hard.

You like Reindeer Games??! Ohhh, so you're the one!

I agree about Snyder as a director. He really hit it out of the park w/300. He and his screenwriter actually improved upon Miller's story, giving characters who had NO arc in the comic, strong arcs in the film. Which makes everything he's made after so tragic. The complete lack of emotionality and depth in everything he's done since is sad to me. (And Watchmen, even more than MoS, had SUCH potential!)
