TFATWS Star Anthony Mackie Faces Backlash For Response To Sam/Bucky Romance Speculation

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie has come under fire for his response to a question about a possible romance between his character, Sam Wilson, and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan).

As is often the case when two characters who share a strong bond are "shipped," there's been some speculation that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) might turn out to be more than just close friends. This theory gained steam when Bucky seemingly referenced a gay dating app in the first episode, but the show has never really given us any reason to believe that the pair intended to embark of a romantic relationship.

Still, it's an attention-grabbing prospect (we're covering it here, after all), so outlets tend to treat it as a "rumor" and ask about it in interviews even though they already know what the answer is going to be. Such was the case when Variety spoke to Mackie about the Disney+ series and the "interpretation that Sam and Bucky are sexually or romantically attracted to each other."

“So many things are twisted and convoluted. There’s so many things that people latch on to with their own devices to make themselves relevant and rational,” the actor replied. “The idea of two guys being friends and loving each other in 2021 is a problem because of the exploitation of homosexuality. It used to be guys can be friends, we can hang out, and it was cool. You would always meet your friends at the bar, you know."

"You can’t do that anymore, because something as pure and beautiful as homosexuality has been exploited by people who are trying to rationalize themselves," he continued. "So something that’s always been very important to me is showing a sensitive masculine figure. There’s nothing more masculine than being a superhero and flying around and beating people up. But there’s nothing more sensitive than having emotional conversations and a kindred spirit friendship with someone that you care about and love.”

Mackie's comments have been interpreted different ways, but many seem to feel that he's pushing back on the notion that Sam and Bucky might be gay, and the "exploitation of homosexuality" line has raised a few eyebrows, to say the least. However, Variety has also been put on blast for framing his response a certain way in the transcript.

Listen to the interview for yourselves below and see what you think.

Social media breeds this kind of trash. People will conplain about anything cuz their real lives are meaningless and boring.

@rebellion - Yup. And they also try to tear down anyone who has a different point of view. You can't even have a debate with someone these days without being hit with a label and shut down.

@rebellion - Eh, Mainstream Media is just as much to blame. Why report on what a few people on twitter said and make it big news. I guess to generate clicks on controversial opinions... Heck this article already has almost 200 comments. Kaching.

Even though I'm gay, I have not once considered their relationship anything beyond platonic.

@rebellion - People need lives - people need to stop letting social media blind them into an empty shell - all you have to do is look at the feeds on IG, FB and TikTok and see people are starving to be noticed - it's not even about having fun and showing something cool or really informative - it's the "hey I need attention, will you like me for doing or showing stupid shit " mentality.

@rebellion - Yup, and I'm waiting for some fans to ask the Rock if his character is romantically paired with Vin Diesel's character in F&F, or someone ask Channing Tatum if his character is romantically involved with Jonah Hill's character in 21JS, and watch them get attacked for their honest responses by all these sensitive people.tBest thing to do in this era of "there has to be a meaning behind everything" sensitivity is just hit the ignore button.icall

Why is he getting backlash for this? He’s right on so many levels. Friendship shouldn’t depend on your sexual preference it should depend on you character and how you treat others. I absolutely hate how every little thing that someone says is met with backlash and hostility. He never once denounced homosexuality he praises it. People are people. Not everything has to be political.

@M3T4LL0 - Agree, why cant people just accept it as bromance? 2 hetero guys (or girls) can be close and not be attracted to each other in a sexual way. People are only seeing what they want these days.

@M3T4LL0 - any wonder so many actors, sports stars or newsreaders get off SM now. People can destroy you now for anything.

I am not gay, so I don't feel I'm qualified to determine if homosexuality is being exploited in this context (it's not like Disney is selling disingenuous pride flags with Bucky and Sam on them). It's just fan shippers fan shipping, right?. It's just what they do.

That said, I'm also sure it's a strange experience to have a character you play turned in this way by a part of the fandom. (My gaydar is notoriously bad, but I never saw anything ever remotely hinted at with Sam, though I will absolutely go to bat for the Bi-cky folks.)

A couple of inartful words in the statement? Maybe. During Pride Month, not the best look. But I'm sure this will blow over. (Delete your twitter just in case, maybe.)

He’s absolutely right. It’s just friendship, plain and simple.

Social media has bred an unhealthy ENTITLEMENT in people. Doesn’t sound like he’s denouncing or trashing homosexuality at all in the defense of his take.

@BlackBeltJones - As a gay man I see the ignorance of society towards straight men and it's sad. Social Media and Religious folk have this idea that men are supposed to masculine 24-7. The moment a straight man gives another man a hug or admits to liking art or something out of the norm of toxic masculinity they instantly get labeled gay. And it's ridiculous.
Catmanlives
Catmanlives - 6/18/2021, 8:54 AM
@SonOfAGif - Yep. Some people are seriously insecure around the idea. My childhood best friend and I say "Love you bro" all the time and give each other a big ol hug. Life too short not to say it. Especially in these times. Doesn't mean I wanna role around in the hay with him. Lol.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 6/18/2021, 9:11 AM
@SonOfAGif - my male best friends and I say “love you brother” after the end of every call and when we all leave if we’re hanging out.

We always hug after someone makes a big accomplishment. A true EMBRACE that’s not a few seconds. One of my boys has cried after a loss and I’ve hugged and held him.

I think somewhere along the way social media tried to misconstrue and manipulate the love between straight guys who are friends and brothers. Brotherhood and friendship is its own special dynamic.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 6/18/2021, 4:40 PM
@BlackBeltJones - exactly! And that's why a lot of straight men turn into toxic masculine individuals because they feel that's the true way to portray themselves for societies acceptance.

This getting an article is such a gen z move, the world is so sensitive right now.I don’t see what issue there could possibly be with what he said.Today it’s like if your not actively pushing the majority’s agenda then somehow you are the enemy & are now destined for a date in the court of public opinion with cancellation as a possible sentence. It’s so lame. The way he said what he said was weird but I agree that if 2 dudes are close now there’s now this big push to make them gay. It’s so weird.Even actors get in on it like Oscar Isaac in Star Wars probably just to appease the masses. But it’s getting kinda silly.Guys can be close without hooking up with each other
