THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER Showrunner Addresses Theories That Bucky Barnes Might Be Bisexual

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman has opened up on theories that Bucky Barnes might be bisexual after fans picked up on something the hero said in the show's first episode.

During the first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes goes on a date (with a woman) and mentions seeing lots of tiger pictures on the dating apps he's been using. That's led to a lot of speculation online that the former HYDRA assassin may have been swiping right on men and women, as photos of people posing with tigers have been predominantly used on men's profiles (before, in real-life, Tinder decided to ban them).

It feels like a stretch, and another one of those crazy fan theories that's got out of hand. However, that didn't stop NME from asking The Falcon and The Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman about it.

He laughed in response to being asked if the character's sexuality will be "definitively answered," saying: "I'm not diving down rabbit holes, but just keep watching."

While it would certainly be a bold move on Marvel's part to head down this route with the character, some of the TV spots and stills we've seen for the Disney+ series have left many wondering if romance could be on the cards for Bucky and Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter.

Time will tell on that front, but it does sound like Bucky's romantic life will be touched on in some way. We're not banking on him and Sam Wilson declaring their undying love for each other, though.

I did say something along those lines back in the "cap and bucky secretly love each other" theory days, as that's really the only way it would make sense for both of them. But with subsequent films at the bare minimum it's clear they're both straight.

@Origame - I wouldn’t say it’s “clear” that they’re both straight since Bisexuality/homosexuality is something people tend to hide or suppress, especially if you’re from the 40’s.

If a writer wanted to go down that road, they could, without retconning anything.

@feedonatreefrog - the fact it wasn't revealed at all alone makes it a retcon.

@Origame - That’s not how that works

@GameOn - ...yes it is. Any new information, unless planned from the start, is a retcon. Are you really going to tell me watching bucky in any previous movies indicates a plan that he's bi?
