LOKI Episode 3 Featured An Obscure Marvel Comics Cameo With Ties To The Green Goblin - SPOILERS

It's come to light that this week's episode of Loki included a deep-cut Marvel Comics cameo, and the character has some familial ties to Spider-Man baddie, the Green Goblin.

Season 2 of Loki has featured quite a few Easter Eggs over the course of its three episodes, but this week's chapter, "1893," actually included a deep-cut Marvel Comics cameo that seems to have flown under most viewers' radars.

In the credits, Richard Dixon's character - who purchases Victor Timely's invention and then gives chase when he realizes the Loom is a fake - is listed as Robber Baron, who made an appearance way back in Human Torch #16 in 1944.

There was another "Robber Barron" who might be seen as a better match for Loki's take on the character, however: Norman Osborn's great-grandfather, Alton.

In 2000's Spider-Man: the Revenge of the Green Goblin miniseries, Norman reveals that his ancestor, Alton Osborn, was responsible for building the Osborn family fortune. Alton came to be known as a robber baron, a businessperson who amasses large amounts of wealth, typically by means of unfair business practices.

Loki's Robber Baron is almost certainly not supposed to be this exact character, or course, but it is an intriguing little callback for Spidey fans nonetheless.

This week's episode concluded with Timely accompanying the God of Mischief and Mobius back to the TVA, and Sylvie seemingly stranding Renslayer back in He Who Remains' castle with Miss Minutes, who hints that she's about to spill some shocking secrets about her uneasy ally's history with the Kang Variant.

I just wanna know if Kang is responsible for pruning certain characters, like Norman and the X-Men, out of the ‘sacred’ timeline. It would go a long way in explaining their absence.

@FireandBlood - The fact that Norman Osbourne has not been introduced is something Marvel fans should get excited about. In addition to Osbourne, Dr. Doom, Galactus, and the X-Men are all well known characters Marvel has up their sleeve and can turn this low point around.

... Robber Baron is a term outside Marvel Comics, lol.

Such a damn good episode. Loki is just one of those Disney Plus shows that doesn't feel like throw away filler content.

@ModHaterSLADE - Agreed. This season has been great since its premiere.

The past 4 series' they put out (Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Secret Invasion, and Moon Knight) were all dumpster juice.

@Mercwitham0uth - ESPECIALLY Secret Invasion.Just too slow paced for my tastes.

Ofc its not the same character, they just pick and chose what they want from the comic and do their own thing. These writers just playing that game where you have a sentence and ask ppl to stick a word in it.

As good as Defoe was, I don't see why the NWH villains can't be recast later on. How many live action Jokers have we had?
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 10/21/2023, 2:25 PM
@MCUKnight11 - Close to a dozen but how many of them can touch Dafoe’s performance? I can think of only one.

@MCUKnight11 - Yes to this! If they do recast...Michael C. Hall

MCUKnight11
MCUKnight11 - 10/21/2023, 2:37 PM
@FireandBlood - McConaughey, Odenkirk, and Esposito would be my top 3. Honestly, I think Octavius would be the hardest to recast since there really isn't an obvious fancast that makes sense. Closest I could think of is Mark Hamill but too old. Regardless, it better happen at some point because that NWH concept art is too good to never be used.

@MCUKnight11 - McConaughey for Osborn, Rainn Wilson for Octavius, Henry Cavill for Kraven, Robert Maillet for Rhino, Pedro a Pascal for Tarantula
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 10/21/2023, 5:29 PM
@MCUKnight11 - People say it’s too obvious, but McConaughey and Chalamet have been my picks for Norman and Harry for awhile now.

OmegaBlack13 - 10/21/2023, 5:29 PM
@JayBarrick - Rainn Wilson as Octavius is great

@MCUKnight11 - Think about the thematic tension they can create with Holland’s Spidey obsessing/watching over an MCU Norman Osborn to ensure he doesn’t turn into the Goblin.

And then a relationship gone bad with Harry can be the catalyst to his creation.

robber baron is/was just a term. It doesn't mean squat in terms of a character from the comics. Jeez, this is like that Mephisto shid all over again...

r1g0r - 10/21/2023, 3:07 PM
@SpiderBloke2099 -

The subtitles spelled out the name "Robber Baron" with capital R & B, as a proper given name.

OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 10/21/2023, 5:31 PM
@r1g0r - The script could list the character as Robber Baron in the same way that it would list someone as Crying Man or Woman Driver

Or "OmegaBlack13".

That fat chick in the article cover has a rather physical job so why is she so out of shape? I mean, if she was one of the desk jockey's then sure, I'd buy that but she's out in the field. It just seems so out of place when you compare her to the other pruners.

@HashTagSwagg - What a stupid fvcking comment. Lol. She's just a large woman; doesn't at all look out of shape. She's just built like a Tight End.

Meanwhile, your avatar. Now that's out of shape.

HashTagSwagg - 10/22/2023, 2:25 PM
@Variant - Quit making excuses, the chick is just overweight and visually it stands out and not in a positive way, especially when compared to the rest of her co workers who at least look capable of doing the physical side of the job.
