LOKI Season 2 Reactions Are In - Find Out What Critics Are Saying About The First 4 Episodes

The second season of Marvel Studios' Loki premieres this Thursday on Disney+, and the social media reactions for the first four (of six) episodes has now lifted.

Things pick up right where we left off in the season 1 finale, with the God of Mischief desperately trying to warn a Mobius from a completely different timeline about the impending arrival of He Who Remains' far more dangerous Variants.

Without giving too much away, the story doesn't progress exactly as you might expect, with the fallout of Sylvie's murder of the Kang Variant taking a backseat (initially, at least) to a more immediately pressing problem for Loki and the TVA.

Personally, I was a tad disappointed by these first 4 eps, which I didn't feel lived up to the brilliance of the debut season. However, the majority of reactions were quite a bit more positive, with many hailing Loki's return as the best MCU Disney+ series we've seen in a long time (yes, some do tend to say that about every new Disney+ show).

Have a read through the reactions below, and be sure to check back tomorrow for the full reviews.

Loki season 2 "promises new excitement as it thrusts the infamous God of Mischief into a new set of adventures with the TVA."

The series stars Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Eugene Cordero, Rafael Casal, Tara Strong, Kate Dickie, Liz Carr, Neil Ellice, with Jonathan Majors, Ke Huy Quan and Owen Wilson.

Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, Dan Deleeuw and Kasra Farahani will direct all six episodes.

The head writer is Eric Martin. Kevin Feige, Stephen Broussard, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Kevin R. Wright, Tom Hiddleston, Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, Eric Martin and Michael Waldron are the executive producers, with Trevor Waterson serving as co-executive producer.

Loki season 2 begins streaming on October 6, exclusively on Disney+.

It's interesting to see how people react to things, but I think I've moved past really caring about reviews of media. There have been some things that get amazing reviews that I didn't care for, another things that get trashed that I liked. And a lot of social media critics will say, "just sharing my opinion" and that's fine, but I also think it's driven by attention seeking. Attention from Marvel fans for the good stuff and attention from film Twitter for the negative stuff.

Either way, it rings hollow to me now. I have a hard time believing that some of these statements that people make are their genuine reaction anymore. I think I'm grown past the need to have my interests validated by the internet public.

@ShellHead -

Contrarianism is a f#ckin' disease, and Lord knows I've made my feelings clear in this place over how I abhor the very freedom to say "I say something different so I'm better than all of you", but let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater here.

For every dozen of attention seeking hipsters that there are, and you rightfully pointed out, there's one or two among them with actual constructive arguments that are worth listening to.

This Loki has nothing to do with the one in the comics, it is a sacrilege for comics fans.

The very convoluted plots of the Disney/MARVEL TV series were supposed to be clarified in the movies and there would be continuity in the plot. For example, Loki was going to be the introduction of Kang, the new supervillain master.

And now a second season but, What for?

The word in capital letters is DISAPPOINTED

@DrReedRichards - When it comes to social media and YouTube, it seems as if it can be profitable to be either a fanboy or a hater. It seems that there are certain reviewers that always love something and other reviewers that always hate something. It is less common to find a person that gives a more nuanced review these days. That must not result in as many clicks.

@mountainman -

I half-agree with you here. Both biases (pro and anti) have their respective audience, but hating sure seems to bring on a lot more revenue, just by definition of having any kind of activity in views or comments.

Those platforms base their clicks on raw interaction, simple as that. Pitiful, but it is what it is.

@DrReedRichards - I do wonder how much of it accurately depicts the audience sentiment.

Yes on YouTube, you will find more channels that dislike modern MCU, Star Wars, and DC. But take a universally loved show like Better Call Saul, and most every YouTube reviewer loved it.

Another genre example is Wheel of Time. I’d say the positive reactions are far outweighing the negative ones. As someone who saw a huge increase in quality from season 1 to season 2 that feels justified.

So the question has to be is it the online negativity that fuels people to not like these products, or is negativity coming from the fact that a lot of people genuinely don’t like these products now?

As someone who personally has lost a lot of my interest in MCU, DC and Star Wars in recent years over what I see as bad writing and direction, I don’t think that I’m influenced by these online celebrities that I don’t watch.

@mountainman -

That's an interesting approach.

Perhaps we shouldn't see reviews as positive or negative in regards to whatever product's quality, but instead as positively or negatively interacting with the general consensus.

Like you said with the Wheel Of Time series (haven't read or watched it personally but I'm familiar with it's online reception), the positive videos seem to outweigh the negatives seeing how very few expected it to actually improve.

Another similar example I'll bring up is One Piece and how its Netflix adaptation seems to have become exploded on YouTube. Practically noone expected it to be as good as it was, and I'm talking as a fan of the series, so naturally upon release, ie when everyone e oectex it to be bad, everyone rushed to comment on how good it actually is. Paradoxically however, now that everyone is singing its praises, you start seeing more and more videos pop up on how "not that good" it actually is.

I hope that makes sense.

@DrReedRichards - One Piece is an interesting one. It seems like it had all the ingredients for failure, and it seems to be pretty universally loved by those who know the source and those who don’t.

It was certainly a surprise hit. Similar thing happened with Andor. Even the people who tend to not like most modern Star Wars (EX:Critical Drinker), liked it.

It’s certainly a complex issue, and for online content creators, it benefits them to have a strong opinion one way or the other. Nuanced and balanced approaches just don’t drive views and clicks quite as much.

TCD is a waste of potential. The dude has a voice of his own, or at least he used to, but now he seems to have sunk head-deep in the modern grifting Kool-Aid. Seeing a book writer like he is actually be against the WGA for practically no reason other than sticking it to "SJW libtards" is downright inexcusable.

There'ss no salvation for this guy, he's way down the rabbit hole at this point.

mountainman - 10/3/2023, 8:56 AM
@DrReedRichards - I used to find his reviews funny and insightful. Occasionally he will still have one that interests me, but I essentially know what he is going to say about anything Marvel or Star Wars.

He certainly is not as far down that rabbit hole as, for example” Nerdrotic, but he does seem to tow that line.

It’s tough for me personally because I don’t like where a lot of this genre stuff has gone over the last 10 years, but I also don’t agree with all those guys. Looping back to your original point, I wonder if there are a lot of people like me who aren’t the biggest fans of the modern Marvel/Star Wars stuff, and get drawn into those channels just because they are critical about it.

At least from what I've seen, those are his audience.

He posts something controversial, those contrarians who were eager to feel validated praise him for it, so he ends up posting more and more of it, and before he realizes it ends up becoming his actual mindset in no time.

For the most part sounds pretty good but that some elemets like the sci-fi jargon might need another rewatch to get it all better which is fine by me, one always understands things a lot more in a rewatch. Can't wait for Thursday.

And speaking of rewatches, that is what I am gonna do with S1 between today (Tuesday) and on Wednesday before Season 2 debuts.

I feel like a lot of the disappointment for those who felt that way stems from the fact that the MCU is on one hand too overhwlming to follow any more (let alone from the very start for any newcomers) and on the other hand not as interconnected as it used to be with every other single corner of the franchise.

When the first season of Loki came out, it was hailed as the entry to this new saga's big bad, and rightfully so. It actually felt necessary, and it turned out to be exactly that. Today, in a post-Quantumania Phase V, a lot of the enthusiasm just isn't there any more.

I get it. It saddens me, but I get it.

@DrReedRichards - You are right here... I don't know whose brilliant idea was to make the movies and series stand alone and not connected. It's as if all the series and movie happened in different multiverse of MCU. Which was really underwhelming. What made phase 1 to 3 is really missing here now. Coming to Loki, looks like it is going to divide fans and critics in their opinion. I could see, Some Saying Sylvie stealing show and Mark says not so great about her. So I'll wait until I watch. Glad that the series is only 6 episodes

Positive or negative, it's so stupid to me when reviews are put out for part of a season of television (at least for ones as short as 6 episodes). Imagine if film reviews only covered the first 45-60 minutes. I just don't think it's a fair assessment of a story being told a lot of the time.

For example, remember when the first season of Luke Cage received rave reviews? Only problem was that it covered just the first half of the season, which was night & day better than the second half. So the reviews wound up being overwhelmingly positive for season 1 despite the fact that it was incredibly uneven & among the weakest for the marvel Netflix shows.

I've seen the opposite happen too, where a season got off to a slow start, because it was being told in a slow burn. But since the reviews covered just part of the overall story, it didn't cover the payoff. Such a dumb system for short seasons of tv.

Loki s1 was the most overrated thing in phase 4. Shang Chi was a close 2nd.

@KaioKen - Overhyped but it was in comparison to the garbage they put out contemporaneously to it, in which case it was pretty good by comparison.
