The season 2 finale of Loki is now streaming on Disney+, and the events of the episode marked a major shift for the God of Mischief that will likely have significant ramifications for the MCU going forward.
In "Glorious Purpose," Loki realizes that attempting to save Victor Timely and succeeding in expanding the rings of the Temporal Loom is pointless, because, as Sylvie points out, as soon as the timelines started branching, "this was doomed to happen." He then decides to go back and see if he can prevent Sylvie from killing He Who Remains at the End of Time, but this comes with an all new set of problems.
The Kang Variant explains that his death was never going to stick, anyway, because he had put a failsafe in place to ensure that the additional timelines will always branch in order to keep the Sacred Timeline intact. Without him there to oversee things, there will be a devastating war between the different realities (a Secret War, perhaps?).
Loki ultimately decides not to kill Sylvie, and instead travels back to the Loom and uses his magic to gather all the loose timelines together, essentially transforming into a version of the World Tree from Norse mythology. There, the new "God of Stories" must sit for eternity(?) to ensure that his friends and everyone else can live in peace on the various timelines.
Is this the end of Loki's story? Doubtful!
Tom Hiddleston was a guest on the Jimmy Fallon show, and gave a very interesting response when asked if the season finale would lead directly into Deadpool 3 and/or Avengers: Secret Wars.
Loki may not appear in Deadpool 3 himself, but the TVA are rumored to play a big part in the story, and we would put money on the character showing up in either The Kang Dynasty or Secret Wars.
Loki season 2 "promises new excitement as it thrusts the infamous God of Mischief into a new set of adventures with the TVA."
The series stars Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Eugene Cordero, Rafael Casal, Tara Strong, Kate Dickie, Liz Carr, Neil Ellice, with Jonathan Majors, Ke Huy Quan and Owen Wilson.
