STRANGER THINGS Season 3 Goes Full-Blown 80's With New Coke Ad; Colorful Character Posters Revealed

Stranger Things Season 3 is taking us back to the summer of 1985 when Coca-Cola debuted its now infamous New Coke. Celebrating the series' return, Coca-Cola will be re-releasing New Coke for a limited run.

Netflix continues to tease the return of Stranger Things, releasing new character posters for season three. The posters were released in batches, possibly suggesting the pairs of characters we'll see during the new season.

The first set, for example, features Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Max (Noah Schnapp). It's captioned, "One friendship can change everything," which could indicate we'll be getting a heavy dose of this dynamic duo paired together throughout much of the season.

Another batch hints that "one scoop can change everything." This is referencing the Scoops Ahoy ice cream shop in Starcourt Mall, which figures to play a prominant role in the setting of season three. Steve Harrington and series newcomer Robin work at Scoops Ahoy, and it looks like Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Erica (Priah Ferguson) will meet up with them. Steve and Dustin actually had a really sweet moment at the end of the second season, so it'll be interesting to see their relationship dynamic continues to unfold in season three.

Other character pairings include Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Jim Hopper (David Harbour), Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton), Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery) on his own, and the triplet of Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin), and Will Byers (Noah Schnapp).

Check out the character posters below.

In addition to the new character posters, Netflix has teamed up with Coca-Cola for a limited time promotion that'll see the return of New Coke. As we've already learned, Stranger Things Season 3 is set during the summer of 1985, which is when Coca-Cola debuted New Coke, which was a new formula for the popular soft drink. The product was a complete flop and it took only 79 days for the company to pull the plug on it.

But in celebration of Stranger Things Season 3, Coca-Cola is bringing back the infamous beverage for a limited promotional run. 12-oz. cans of New Coke will be available beginning Thursday, May 23.

New Coke will also appear in several episodes in the upcoming season. Speaking to The New York Times, Stranger Things creators and showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer explained:

“New Coke was always going to play a role this season. It was one of the first ideas in our Season 3 brainstorm. It was the summer of ’85, and when you talk about pop culture moments, New Coke was a really big deal. It would have been more bizarre to not include it.”

The Duffer Brothers have always been keen on incorporating iconic brands from the 80's into Stranger Things to help create a more authentic atmosphere. Besides New Coke, 1985 was a very big year for movies; Back to the Future, The Breakfast Club, The Goonies, and Weird Science all released that year and could make for some wonderful references throughout the season.

Stranger Things Season 3 premieres on Netflix on July 4.

@Saga - if you remove episode 7, season 2 was superior to season 1...

@Saga - yeh season 2 was self aware of its success and the quality suffered. Just having 'bigger and better' and smashing the noustalgia. The main kid didn't have anything to do which just showed how the character driven first series changed into a ham fisted 'do you remember this stuff from the 80s? Do you remember it??????'

@Battabing - are you asking if it’s worth keeping up with? Or just letting other people know that you don’t want to see anymore of this?
🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm still gonna watch it, and I still love this show. But it's been gone for too long for me to get hyped for it. S3 should've been out by now. In fact, it was suppose to in January.

Season 2 was better than season 1, even with the throwaway episode. Mainly because Will is by far the best character on the show.

@Havenless - agree that season 2 was better

@TheDoctor1225- not sure you're getting my recent comment notifications, but in case you still are, here you go:

https://screenrant.com/tala-ashe-legends-tomorrow-season-5-new-character/

So while its great that Tala Ashe is returning to the show (kind of expect her to), its a major loss and a bit of a disappointment that we likely won't see Zari return again. This is quite different from losing Amaya, as Amaya actually had a destiny to fulfill and her arc was perfectly finished.

As I said in a previous comment, was everything that we went through in the finale and, in a sense, the back half of the season worth losing Zari??

I’m hoping we get to see more of Billy, Steve and Dustin, because I didnt really care for the rest last season (maybe Hopper, but he is too much of a plot device for me)
