The first full trailer for
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is now online, and sees former
Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer (well, three Natalie Dormers) arrive in last '30s Los Angeles to raise some hell.
Envisioned as a "spiritual decedent" of Showtime's
Penny Dreadful, this really doesn't appear to have much in common with the acclaimed original show at all. There are supernatural/horror elements (Dormer's character is a demonic shape-shifter), but based on the trailer,
City of Angels appears to be a very different beast altogether.
City of Angels opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega and his partner Lewis Michener become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.
The show also stars Daniel Zovatto, Nathan Lane, Rory Kinnear, Piper Perabo, Thomas Kretschman, Ethan Peck, Kerry Bishé, Johnathan Nieves, Jessica Garza, Adriana Barraza, Michael Gladis, Amy Madigan, Brent Spiner, Lorenza Izzo, Lin Shaye and Adam Rodriguez.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels premieres on Showtime on the 26th April, 2020.
