Natalie Dormer Is Having A Hell Of A Time In LA In The First PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS Trailer

The first full trailer for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is now online, and sees former Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer (well, three Natalie Dormers) arrive in last '30s Los Angeles to raise some hell.

Envisioned as a "spiritual decedent" of Showtime's Penny Dreadful, this really doesn't appear to have much in common with the acclaimed original show at all. There are supernatural/horror elements (Dormer's character is a demonic shape-shifter), but based on the trailer, City of Angels appears to be a very different beast altogether.

City of Angels opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega and his partner Lewis Michener become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

The show also stars Daniel Zovatto, Nathan Lane, Rory Kinnear, Piper Perabo, Thomas Kretschman, Ethan Peck, Kerry Bishé, Johnathan Nieves, Jessica Garza, Adriana Barraza, Michael Gladis, Amy Madigan, Brent Spiner, Lorenza Izzo, Lin Shaye and Adam Rodriguez.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels premieres on Showtime on the 26th April, 2020.

@rebellion - this looks fairly good in it's own right but cant understand why it's even called penny dreadful.they should have just called this something else.

@rebellion - Wonder if it will connect at all to the original show. Obviously for the first season it should stand on its own, buy could we eventually see some of out immortal characters like Dracula, Dorian, Lily, John and this would be unlikely but how about a flashback episode to show how things turned out for Malcolm and Ethan

The show was called Penny Dreadful for a reason. This has zero ties to them

@BigPhilbowski - Pretty much. Pointless. It doesn't look bad, but why not just call it something else?

@BigPhilbowski - Actually after a quick search there was a magazine in the 1800's called Penny Dreadful published stories that were considered cheap entertainment, usually about detectives, criminals and supernatural entities. Hope we eventually see characters from the first series, but this seems to fit

@dracula - yeah but the Penny Dreadfuls were the stories such as frankenstein, the werewolf etc. All the stuff the original show was based on. This has nothing to do with them.

I must be missing the point of the phrase “penny dreadful” from the first series. It basically just means cheap story/comic.

pen·ny dread·ful
/ˈˌpenē ˈdredfəl/
noun
noun: penny dreadful; plural noun: penny dreadfuls
a cheap, sensational comic or storybook.
"penny dreadful comics"

There being a couple different Stories in the series makes sense to me

Looks fantastic. Makes me even more excited for the Halo series. Showtime makes great stuff.

I am absolutely not interested in this. Couldn’t care less about the abused setting and aesthetics, and I despise Nathalie Dormer’s stupid face.

I bet we get Caliban, Dracula or Dorian Gray as the season stinger. Gray is more likely to be in LA during this debauchery time of Hollywood, this their chance to actually have him do something aside from just looking sexy on screen.
