THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT Featured WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS Actor Matt Berry As 8D8

The season premiere of The Book of Boba Fett is now available to stream on Disney+, and it's come to light that returning palace droid 8D8 was voiced by none other than Matt Berry.

The first episode of The Book of Boba Fett is now streaming on Disney+, and while "Stranger in a Strange Land" didn't see the return of many established characters from the galaxy far, far away, one familiar metal face did make an appearance.

As Fett holds court from his throne, we see that The Return of the Jedi's 8D8 is making the introductions. This somewhat freaky-looking droid was only briefly glimpsed in the final film in the original Star Wars trilogy as he branded a Gonk-Droid's feet in the depths of Jabba's palace. He's given a few lines here, though, and if his voice sounded familiar, it's because he's played by none other than Matt Berry.

UK comedy fans will likely know Berry for his roles in The IT Crowd and The Mighty Boosh, as well as the more obscure Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. More recently, he appeared in the TV spinoff of Taika Waititi's What We Do In The Shadows.

We're not sure if 8D8 will have a role to play in the rest of the season, but we'd bet on seeing him again at some point... unless he does something to incur the wrath of his new master, that is.

Darkplace is SO good. Highly recommended. I also need more episodes of Toast of London, stat. I didn't recognize his voice at all though, so I'll need to give the ep a rewatch.

@BestAtWhatIDo - Darkplace is a top tier British comedy. I met Matthew Holness at a screening+q&a of Possum, and the guy couldn’t have been nicer. Have you seen Stath Lets Flats? Unrelated to Dark Place/Holness, but another genius British sitcom, the best there is currently

Wasn't too impressed with the episode as a whole. But I also regularly dislike things Robert Rodriguez directs. In fact the only thing of his Ive ever enjoyed was From Dusk Till Dawn. His efforts always feel... cheap... to me. The fight scenes in this episode were kinda terrible. The great Boba Fett and an assassin with the skills we've seen Fennic posses getting trapped by some random dudes with energy shields was stupid feeling. Boba this episode felt like the bumbling guy who went into the Sarlac Pit, not a seasoned warlord to be feared and respected. It's inconsistent. Is he a helpless oaf after multiple healing sessions in a bacta tank to a random attack in the streets with his second in command at his side, or is he a savage capable of choking out and decapitate a 4 armed monster in the desert after being held prisoner and dehydrated? Pick a lane.

Idk... I didn't like this episode.

@ElricReturns - @ElricReturns - I have to agree that the fight scenes weren't that impressive, especially from a director known for his flashy action. Narratively however, I felt that they served their purpose decently enough.

The flashback fight (with the Tusken Raider) demonstrated Fett has a thing or two to learn from his captors when it comes to combat. He might have a fearsome reputation as a bounty hunter, but he can still be outmatched.

The street fight was an ambush, prepared by an apparently very well-equipped rival. Fett was a bounty hunter, not a crime lord. Fennec spends an entire scene chastising him for choosing to walk down the street, and then for deciding to leave the palace in the first place.

Boba was outflanked, sure, but in his defence his helmet was full of gold. They caught him at his most vulnerable moment. Plus they were saved by the Gamorrean guards, whom Boba had decided to recruit rather than punish.

@ElricReturns - I think as the series go on this first episode will make more sense. Boba needs to grow into the role, there needs to be an arc for him
