We should have seen this coming after those recent set photos, but Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Forest Whitaker has now confirmed that he will return as Saw Gerrera in Andor season 2.
Talking to ComicBook.com (via SFFGazette.com) about his role in Big George Foreman, the iconic actor was asked if it's safe to say he'll be back as the fanatical Rebel when the show returns to Disney+ next year. To that, he simply responded, "Oh yeah, it’s safe to say that."
Saw debuted in The Clone Wars and has since shown up in Star Wars Rebels, The Bad Batch, and hit video game Jedi: Fallen Order.
During Andor's first season, we saw Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgard) meet with Saw for what proved to be an incredibly tense exchange. With that in mind, it's hardly a surprise that we'll see more of the Rebel, with this cameo better explaining his place in the Rebellion and how The Clone Wars soldier became the fanatic we first met in live-action back in 2016.
Season 2 of Andor will play out across four three-episode blocks, with a year passing between each of them. That gives Lucasfilm the opportunity to show Saw's evolution at a much quicker pace, though with so much story to tell over this second and final batch of episodes, there may only be time for the freedom fighter to appear briefly.
Filming was recently brought to a halt in England as a result of safety concerns. According to BBC, that was a result of "recent turbulent weather, which has increased the risk of rockfalls and landslips."
The second and final season chronicles the next steps in Cassian Andor's journey as he fights to assemble a fledgling resistance.
Kathleen Kennedy, Tony Gilroy, Sanne Wohlenberg, Diego Luna and Luke Hull are executive producing the upcoming season, which stars Luna, Adria Arjona, Kyle Soller, Denise Gough, Genevieve O’Reilly, Andy Serkis, Muhannad Bahair, and Joplin Sibtain.
Shooting is currently taking place and will likely wrap in August ahead of Andor's expected season 2 premiere in August 2024.
