ANDOR Showrunner Tony Gilroy Reveals George Lucas' Reaction To ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was Lucasfilm's first spin-off movie, and the filmmaker who took the helm of its reshoots has now revealed that he received a call from George Lucas shortly after its release...

It's no secret that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story went through some big changes as production continued, with filmmaker Tony Gilroy enlisted to fix a third act that was ultimately completely transformed during reshoots.

Lucasfilm may not have entirely trusted Garth Edwards' vision for the story, but the studio was impressed enough with Gilroy to bring him back into the fold as Andor's showrunner. It's a decision which paid off too as the series has been widely hailed as the Star Wars franchise's best TV series.

During an interview with Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), Gilroy revealed that, shortly after Rogue One's release in 2016, he received a surprise call from Star Wars creator George Lucas.

"George Lucas called me after Rogue, I had a 45-minute conversation with him after he saw Rogue, and that's the only time I've ever spoken to him," the filmmaker recalled. "He loved it. He really did. He had a lot of things to say that I...it was like a call from the President."

That's high praise indeed from Lucas, especially as he's mostly kept his thoughts on the new Star Wars movies to himself.

Later in the interview, Gilroy also discussed his approach to the franchise's toxic fans when he decided to return to this Galaxy Far, Far Away in order to take charge of Cassian Andor's origin story on Disney+.

"I was really blown back by what was going on [while working on Rogue One] and this that I hadn't paid attention to. So I knew about it when I came back, I knew what to expect," he explained. "[You've] gotta have pretty thick skin to do that."

"But I pay attention. I don't think we made any real adjustments because of it, but it's been interesting to watch."

In fairness, even the most fickle Star Wars fans have had nothing but good things to say about Andor, particularly after it's expanded this property in new and exciting ways (without a single lightsaber in sight to boot).

Andor season 2 is expected to premiere on Disney+ in August 2024.

ROGUE ONE is a top STAR WARS film for me. It was so well done.

@PC04 - agreed. It has some issues, but out of all movies it nailed the Star Wars feel I missed in the sequels movies.

Solo wasn't as Star Wars as Rogue One, but I fekt it was close to Clone Wars in terms of atmosphere and thus was still very much Star Wars.

Rogue One is still my favourite Disney era Star Wars movie, and Andor is my favourite Star Wars live action show.
Yep Gilroy is worth keeping.

I just don’t get the love for this movie. I think it’s unbelievably overrated. To me it was just boring. Andor on the other hand. Excellent.

Rogue One is probably my favourite Star Wars movie, and Andor is probably my favourite Star Wars thing I've watched period. Keep doing what you do, Tony.

Everyone talks about "toxic fans" but most media simps never talk about the toxic ideas that people like Kennedy and Rian Johnson have used to absolutely destroy everything that was once good about Star Wars. Star Wars fans are Star Wars fans, something turned them "toxic." If you are what you consume, perhaps it's Kennedy's Woke Star Wars that did it.

@HistoryofMatt - There were plenty of toxic fans for the prequel trilogy which is getting more and more love recently. they have always been there just with social media and the internet their voices are very loud now.

@HistoryofMatt - You raise a great point here Matt. This is something that doesn't get any discussion at length. What a great topic this would be to pick apart.

@HistoryofMatt - If you bully people for simply having different likes and dislikes than you, if you bully hired actors for saying the words they were hired to say, you are toxic, and there's no justification for it. Disney making garbage is a totally unrelated thing, and it does not justify that kind of behaviour.
If you are not being personally antagonized, do not antagonize people. Star Wars is not yours, you are not owed anything related to it. I don't care if it shaped your childhood or cured your cancer, it's a product which you have the freedom to either engage with or not. Anything that's not personally directed to you or forced upon you, you can ignore, if you're mature enough.

This is the best SW movie since the original trilogy. Other than Revenge, the rest of the movies are all worthless soulless crap.

"even the most fickle Star Wars fans have had nothing but good things to say about Andor"

That's quite an opinion and gross generalization.

Based on all of the 1 star reviews on IMDB that pretty much counters that

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏👏👏👏
I can see the author of this article fancies themself Multiple Man from X3.
Yeah, I dunno many people who gave Andor such a glowing review. The vibe I get is "It was boring" or "I couldn't finish it".
It's not without quality, but it definitely lacks charm and a certain kind of excitement. That and Obi-Wan were surprisingly disappointing, despite whatever strengths they had. Obi-Wan especially. It's like they got a filmaker who'd never seen a movie in the last 30 years to make it. 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤔

I'm glad he liked it. Rogue One did a great job of using newer technology with the setting of the original trilogy to make something that really felt set in that world.
