Andor wasted no time in taking us back to Cassian's childhood, with the first few episodes revealing the future Rebel was attempting to find his sister. Understandably, that hunt took a backseat after he ran afoul of the Empire, though the hope is we might learn what became of Kerri in season 2.
During a recent interview with Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy addressed that dangling plot thread and strongly hinted we won't get to see Cassian resume his search...or find his sister!
"One of the important things in this show, because of the expanse of it, and because of the detail of it, is knowing when and where to make things intricate and have them tie together, and the other side of it is knowing when to let things go and have chaos."
"And because that’s what life is like and finding that balance that suits the storytelling is part of it. I don’t feel beholden to what you’re talking about in any way, but there are a lot of things that we do that are intricate, that we weed along the way. So that’s a complicated answer."
While not outright stating that this storyline has been abandoned, it seems likely. Perhaps not every mystery needs an answer? After all, the odds of them finding each other again always seemed slim.
Original plans called for Andor to take place over five seasons, with each of those devoted to a year in Cassian's life. Diego Luna, however, baulked at the idea of being committed to the series for that long and plans changed.
As a result, while season 1 was something of a slow burn, the next 12 episodes will cover a number of years, establishing Cassian's place in the Rebellion along the way. Diverging from that for him to track his sister down would be a little strange, so it could be we just get a throwaway line or two revealing Kerri's fate.
Talking about the format change, Gilroy said, "When we come back later, it’ll be literally like a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And then, we’ll jump a year, and then it’ll be, like, four or five days, and then we’ll jump a year, and then there’ll be another four or five days, and then we jump a year, and be another four or five days."
Andor season 2 is set to premiere on Disney+ in August 2024.
