The CW has officially announced today that Donald Faison (Scrubs; Clueless; Remember the Titans) has joined the cast of the upcoming Powerpuff Girls pilot, which has now been renamed Powerpuff. He'll portray their father/creator Professor Drake Utonium.

While fans of the animated series will be familiar with Utonium in his heydey, the older version is being described as “Quirky, debonair, and a pinch narcissistic, Professor Drake is a scientific genius who is immensely proud of the three extraordinary girls he created in his lab. Staring down a midlife crisis, he is determined to repair his relationships with his now-adult daughters.

As previously reported, Chloe Bennet (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.; Valley Girl) will play Blossom, Dove Cameron (DescendantsBarely Lethal) will play Bubbles, and newcomer Yana Perrault will play Buttercup.

Filming is expected to begin soon, with the principal cast having already arrived in Atlanta, so it's probably safe to expect more casting news in the coming days. While unconfirmed, it seems probable that some combination of Mojo Jojo, Miss Sara Bellum, Ms. Keane, and the Mayor will play a part in the series.

The series will pick up with America’s former pint-sized superheroes having grown into disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?
