VENOM Director Reveals A Second Comic Book Storyline Which Has Heavily Influenced The Movie

We recently learned that Sony's upcoming Venom movie will be based on the Lethal Protector storyline and now director Ruben Fleischer has revealed a second surprising source of inspiration for the spinoff.

We've so far seen very little from Venom but during an appearance - via video package - at the Comic-Con Experience 2017 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, director Ruben Fleischer revealed which comic book storylines have influenced the upcoming movie which stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. While we've already heard that the Lethal Protector storyline will come into play, it turns out there's another.

That is Planet of the Symbiotes, a lesser known arc which was written by David Michelinie. In that, Venom teams up with Spider-Man and the Scarlet Spider to investigate a series of symbiote related murders he's been accused of committing. It turns out that the five symbiotes who first appeared in the Lethal Protector story arc are to blame and are building a teleporter to bring the aliens to Earth.

That could take Venom down a sci-fi heavy route and
seeing as Carnage also factored into the story, chances are Cletus Kasady could make some sort of appearance. Of course, very little might have actually been taken from both of these comics when all is said and done so we'll have to wait and see. With the movie coming our way next year, though, chances are we'll start hearing more details soon.

Director is awesome, Hardy is one of the best...yet I feel so disappointed this will probably not have anything to do with Spidey. And also Sony is like WB when it comes to studio interference, so will watch this with the lowest expectations possible.

Dude, I'm all for this movie happening, but it's still really weird not having Spidey in the mix.

My personal theory- Eddie Brock will pretty much be a combination of the Flash Thompson character. It'll be a story of a broken man and a broken alien that being out the worst in one another, yet also ultimately help one another become better.
While there may be several killer symbiote murderers in the film, they'll relegate them to minions and make Carnage the face, the driving force (the Hans Gruber, if you will).
They'll parallel Venom's bloodlust with that of Carnage, but whereas Carnage brutally goes full serial killer with no remorse, Venom will go the Lethal Protector route. Carnage will try to tempt Venom, but they'll ultimately choose the right path.
And while I don't think we'll get any mention of Spider-Man, I think they'll leave it conspicuously ambiguous.

@DentonKnight - Not a bad theory. I wouldn't be too surprised if they went really outside the box. I could see the Life Foundation symbiotes doing just what the article says, but Carnage not being a part of that. I could see Venom facing them early on, but finding out he is not strong enough to do it. So instead he recruits Carnage to help him (killers hunting killers). Carnage takes the bait because he likes being the big bad symbiote and doesn't want Competition. After Venom and Carnage stop the Life Foundation from bringing more Symbiotes to Earth, Carnage turns on Venom and that's the final battle. I See Anne Weying not being She-Venom, but one of the Life Foundation Symbiotes and Eddie helps her get rid of it.

@Dacci - That would be a really good way of involving Anne in the story and bonding her and Eddie in a plausible form.

I honestly think Venom (and by rights the symbiotes) needs an origins movie.

To me it sounds lie we're getting a world where Eddie is already Venom.

I'm not sure this is going to work.

@UltimateCarnage - Really? I'm imagining an alien invasion movie origin... The aliens come to Earth, bond/take over hosts and then plot to bring the rest of their species, but for some reason Eddie Brock and his symbiote have the will to resist and fight the others.

Eh, could be a decent way to go. Glad that they're keeping the "alien" angle, if so. Makes me think of "The Thing" if it wasn't replacing people but bonding with them instead.
