Call Of Duty Director Takes Aim At Comic Book Movies With Surprising Comparison

Call of Duty director Peter Berg has drawn a surprising comparison between the franchise and comic book movies, explaining why he believes Captain Price, Ghost and company are a different breed.

There's a lot of excitement surrounding Paramount Pictures' Call of Duty movie, though the news that Peter Berg is at the helm has drawn mixed reactions.

The Friday Night Lights helmer is no stranger to military action, having directed titles like Lone Survivor and The Kingdom. However, the likes of Battleship and Spenser Confidential didn't receive the warmest of responses. On a more positive note, Yellowstone and Landman scribe Taylor Sheridan has co-written the screenplay, which does bode well for the project.

It was recently confirmed that the Call of Duty movie will draw inspiration from the Modern Warfare games, and Berg has now shed new light on how he's planning to approach the property. His biggest priority? Avoiding what he sees as the trappings of comic book movies and their less complex characters.

"If you really look at the missions and the storylines and the characters like Captain Price, Soap, Ghost and Alex, these are complicated humans. These are not, and no disrespect, cartoon characters or comic books," Berg told ComicBook.com (via GameFragger.com). "These are very nuanced storylines; there’s a real soul to the 'Modern Warfare' universe."

"Yes, there’s violence and hardware and equipment and killing," he continued. "But underneath it, I think the game, and the creators of the game, are really looking at the cost of war, the cost of having to be a warrior who’s, for whatever reason, chosen to put himself between real danger and the rest of us, and the burden that these guys carry."

The world of Call of Duty is grounded, albeit heightened, so these comments from Berg are definitely interesting (albeit somewhat disrespectful to the superhero genre).

Berg's movie was first announced in September 2025, with it said at the time that Paramount had plans to expand the property across film and television. Call of Duty has the potential to be a great movie, and while some fans were disappointed to learn that the franchise is moving away from its World War II roots, a present-day setting is arguably a better option than the games set in the near future.

Paramount CEO David Ellison previously said that the studio is approaching the film "with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve."

“I can promise that we are resolute in our mission to deliver a cinematic experience that honors the legacy of this one-in-a-million brand – thrilling longtime fans of Call of Duty while captivating a whole new generation," he added.

Call of Duty is set to be released in theaters on June 30. 2028.

Oh man. No disrespect then disrespect. I don’t know why everyone acts like comic book movies don’t even try to be movies. Just take Wakanda forever and it’s exploration of grief and so many others but I guess.

@MyCoolYoung - it's for the headlines. They know what they're saying is incorrect but it grabs good sound bites because it's divisive and edgy and gets fans and haters talking

@MyCoolYoung - Good example, and people like this director who make snide remarks about comics obviously have never read any to say such nonsense. Many comics that are almost as good as novels out there...

@SupermanFamFan @Vigor wholeheartedly agree. It’s just becoming old and tired. We just had the guy say something about the multiverse which was obvious he didn’t watch because there hasn’t been that many movies dedicated to the multiverse itself.

Like if yall not watching just stop commenting on them or if you are watching and can’t comprehend what you’re seeing, maybe you aren’t as smart as you think you are.

He still holding that grudge ever since Avengers sunk his Battleshit huh?

WI wonder which pop-culture celebrity he's going to cast for this big budget catastrop---I mean blockbuster.

@Irregular - Due to releases being so different here it was actually John Carter and Battleship that started around the same time here in Japan. Going from one of those to the next was like watching Taylor Kitsch's promising career take two in the head in real time.

I would take this director more seriously if he said his movies will be based more off of Black Ops storyline (specifically BO1 which is very deep imo).

But "no disrespect" Mr. Director...

I get his point that the vast majority of comic books and adaptations don’t really explore the cost of the violence it’s protagonists inflict, it’s just very funny to use this to prop up the US Military Propaganda Game.

Big words from the director of the "BATTLESHIP" movie.

@BiffDitko - Came here to say this. Easy to throw shade while he forgets his own work.

@alleverybody - The funniest thing about this, to me anyway, is that he directed one of the BEST NON-COMIC BASED Superhero movies! "Hancock" was actually a really GREAT Superhero movie.
And "Friday Night Lights" is also a modern classic.
So that's why I'm scratching my head.
Next to "Unbreakable" I'd say "Hancock" is one of the best orginal Superhero movies out there. Legit.

@BiffDitko - He's a decent director, but it's just weird to slag comic book movies when he knows how the Hollywood machine works. But we all often hold conflicting thoughts about how we know things are vs. reality; how he'd prefer movies to turn out vs. what he's able to produce.

@Rpendo - "Hancock" is actually a fantastic Superhero movie.

@BiffDitko - hey to each his own but my guy, that movie suuuuucks

It had an excellent premise, and a decent first act, but it completely falls apart about a third of the way through.
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 10/27/2026, 10:57 AM
@Rpendo - Can NOT argue there. 🎯
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 10/27/2026, 11:02 AM
@Rpendo - Meaning I agree with you about the middle/Ending but as far as movies based on an original Superhero, it's really good.
That scene when he stops the train and the woman says "You smell like alcohol." And he goes
"Cause I'm DRUNK!"
That was great.
I love the concept of super powers being a BURDEN and not a gift.
"Hancock" did a fantastic job of telling that story. The actor they ORGINALLY WANTED was actually GEORGE CLOONEY. He almost did it.
Smith was great though.

Let’s all remember what this director said about Call of Duty and video games in general back in 2013…..

“Pathetic. Pathetic. Keyboard courage. Can't stand it. The only people that I give a Call of Duty get-out-of-jail-free card to is the military.

I think anyone that sits around playing video games for four hours... It's weak. Get out, do something.”

This is from the from the director of Battleship?... Also. I've played all Modern Warfare games. They're very straight forward. There's not a lot of introspection so idk wtf he's talking about.
RealTurner

@Rexotron - COD gets plenty of flack for pumping out titles one after another as well. "I'm making art those guys aren't" is just a bad position to pitch from; if you need to tear someone else down to elevate yourself, you're doing something wrong somewhere.

@Rexotron - seems like he might be trying to beef that aspect of it up for the movie.

This guy seriously has been talking like he was in the military for decades now.

Like, bitch, where the [frick] were you when my friends and I were walking over minefields in [frick]ing Marjah while rounds were cracking right over our heads?

This guy is a wannabe little bitch with all his tough-guy talk who thinks that making military propaganda movies gives him de facto military experience.

I fuvking hate Peter Berg…

It's funny when writers or directors of a movie they're creating feel the need to attack a different movie or genre to make their project feel more pretentious. How about making the movie and seeing how it plays out before you talk nonsense. This reminds me of Junior Caminero from the Tampa Bay Rays and all the trash talking he has done in the post season. Meanwhile his team is being dog walked by Milwaukee.

Reminder that Steven Spielberg wanted to direct the Call of Duty movie but they chose to go with the “Battleship” director of all people
