"You have no idea what loss is."

HBO Max (via GameFragger.com) has released a new promo spotlighting footage from several of the streamer's upcoming shows, and right at the end, it gives us a first look at HBO's adaptation of Naughty Dog's best-selling video game, The Last of Us.

It's very brief, but we do get to see Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) hiding out, as the grizzled mercenary teaches his young charge how to survive. We also have a flashback shot of Joel and his daughter Sarah (Nico Parker), and Bill (Nick Offerman) removing his mask.

Check out The Last of Us footage in the player below, and you'll also find the full HBO Max teaser with new shots from House of the Dragon, Succession, the second season of White Lotus, and more.

The Last of Us is set 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed and centers on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and the game's creator Neil Druckmann are writing and executive producing the show. The first season will adapt the events of the original game, but is also expected to include elements of the sequel. Druckmann recently confirmed that the series will take some liberties with the story.

The first season will consist of 10 episodes and is expected to air sometime this year, though no official premiere date has been announced.

I don't know about this. I'm not familiar with the actress and even though I like Pedro Pascal, he feels like a miscast. We'll see.

I wasn't a big fan of the games. I like the story. But the games themselves could never keep my interest.

Last of Us was unique as a game, and its specific execution.

Extract that story into a series and it’s not that unique, especially after so many zombie shows, and sad dad takes care of surrogate child stories (with Pedro Pascal at that).

@feedonatreefrog - Yep. That's pretty much what I've been saying since its announcement.

@feedonatreefrog - I think it would have worked as a movie, so you can really bring out the realism with a huge budget that the game couldn't, but for a show I am kinda iffy on it because its probably going to take more time to finish watching the show than to just complete the game again.

Adapting frame by frame the game would be impossible and unwise, what can elevate this adaptation is the dynamic with the performances. If the audience can connect with this Joel and Ellie then that will be enough imo.

It's hard for me to give an opinion about Ellie because she's a good actress, but the casting is horrible, seeing a girl who doesn't look anything like her makes you lose concentration

It's not just The Last of Us that gets my attention in that promo though, there is a ton of stuff coming that I'm gonna give (another) go.

New seasons for His Dark Materials (surprisingly), White Lotus, Barry, Our Flag Means Death, Lakers Dynasty, Tokyo Vice, and Warrior (finally!), but also White House Plumbers and Love & Death look great. Zaslav is almost forgiven for cancelling Batgirl.

@bkmeijer1 - Don't forgive Zaslav for us getting these shows(they were decided on prior to him). Just be glad he hasn't cancelled/shelved any of them(yet).

@JoeInTheBox - that's why he is almost forgiven, because he hasn't cancelled them (yet). There are for sure I few of those that I expected to get axed

I am real curious as to how much will be in season one? I don’t think you can fit the whole game in one season but where does it stop? Having a whole season in Boston seems boring and going to Pittsburgh seems too much.

@Grodd87 - The first season covers the entire first game, which is like 6 hours.

I absolutely loved the first game, and I'm usually not a fan of zombie stuff.

Hard pass on this show, though.

I recognize that from the game!!!

I like it when my brain recognizes things.

Honestly, the game is already so cinematic that I still don't understand what the point of doing this is. I don't think even the acting measures up tbh. Most games today are more cinematic than movies, just look at God of War 4.

I like Craig Mazin's Chernobyl, but man sometimes I think most of us would prefer to spend that money on something original. Chernobyl had amazing storytelling, definitely recommend it if you haven't see it, though it is pretty somber and gruesome.
