Warner Bros./New Line dropped a red band trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot earlier today, and fans of the video game franchise seemed to be pretty happy with the first footage from this R-rated adaptation.

Now, we have a batch of hi-res stills which spotlight some of the key moments from the teaser.

The images feature classic characters such as Raiden, Liu Kang and Sub-Zero demonstrating their magical abilities, along with Jax and Sonya in action. We also see Mileena licking blood from her sai, and Kano holding aloft the heart he just ripped from the chest of his monstrous opponent (that better not be Reptile!).

Check out the stills below along with the trailer, and let us know what you think. You can also take a look at the recent motion character posters HERE.

In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

Mortal Kombat is set for a simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max this April 12.

The trailer really has that bland direct-to-DVD action movie feel with subpar actors, boring cheap empty sets and trash cringeworthy lines. Was hoping for something a bit more epic and blockbuster quality. Can still be fun though.

@Kingdork - Honestly, we were never going to get that. A studio simply isn't going to invest that much time, effort and money into what's seen as a schlocky video game franchise. Best we can hope for is prob what we see here... and to be fair, it looks like a pretty solid adap. I can't see it blowing us away though.

@RorMachine - Yeah you're right. Since the games have really stepped up in quality especially as of late I was expecting something better, crazier with more flair for a 2021 reboot. I should reset my expectations based on the original 90's movie not MK 11 then.

@Kingdork - I think this is unfortunately why so much heavy genre-stuff never gets made. Things like Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Sonic, Street Fighter, etc just don't have studios chomping at the bit to do them full force, so we're stuck in this middle of the road effort. I feel like Speed Racer was the last one to have any sort of real care put into it both from a budgetary and craft standpoint, although to be fair, this one looks like it'll be better than most video game adaptations just based on how faithful they're being to the aesthetics and tone of the MK franchise

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Thank you. Is it that hard to create a form fitting face mask? Cosplayers do it all the time. Bucky had a pretty decent face mask in the Winter Solider. Come on WB.

@BlackBeltJones @Fares - I really don't get it. Here's a wide angle shot just for the hell of it lol:

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - cosplayers pull form fitting masks with ease.

Its so janky looking here. So noticeable when he's still.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - The difference is stirking. Even the 1995 movie had smaller masks.
