During gamescom this week, Netflix finally unleashed the first footage for Zack Snyder's upcoming space opera Rebel Moon. But as gamescom is an annual trade fair dedicated to all things video games, the trailer was accompanied by another exciting announcement: Netflix is teaming up with developer Super Evil Megacorp to create a new video game based on the highly anticipated sci-fi epic.

Details for the newly announced game remain light, but Snyder did confirm that the "action" game will take place after the events of the first two movies and is meant to expand the world. You'll be able to pick your own rebel and play solo or co-op with up to four players. Super Evil Megacorp is best known for its cooperative gameplay in titles such as Vainglory, Catalyst Black, and TMNT: Splintered Fate.

Rebel Moon, which has drawn comparisons to other space operas like Star Wars, follows Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among villagers who is thrust into action when a peaceful colony becomes threatened by the armies of the brutal interstellar royal empire, Imperium.

"Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge," the synopsis teases. "As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed."

In announcing their work on the project, developer Super Evil Megacorp stated: "As you can see from the trailer, the universe of Rebel Moon is vast and exotic, dark and dangerous; truly a fantasy primed for rich storytelling and the committed dreams of our development team. Building worlds is our passion and the opportunity to collaborate on this one has been a dream come true, making us equal parts excited and terrified by the creative challenge ahead."

There's no release date for the Rebel Moon video game; however, fans can look forward to Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire premiering on Netflix later this year on December 22. The sequel, Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, will follow just a few short months later on April 19, 2024. As the game is set after the events of both movies, it's quite possible it won't be released until late 2024.

When it does arrive, the Rebel Moon game will be exclusive to Netflix members.

@GhostDog - Whatever happened with his Army of the Dead series? Did he just give up on that?
GhostDog
GhostDog - 8/24/2023, 10:04 AM
@CorndogBurglar - You know I completely forgot about that movie and series. Wasn't he supposed to do an anime? There was even a prequel film too one of the cast made. Maybe he did give up, who knows.

@GhostDog -

It's actually kinda cool that he went to Netflix and basically is starting from scratch.

Better he is over there than DC 😐....

@CorndogBurglar - it’s still in production but I suppose work got halted when NFX closed most of its animation studios.
And not to mention that AotD wasn’t well received and didn’t have too high numbers. The prequel also faltered.

They might have given up on the franchise and hope for Zack to succeed at his second try

Still putting the cart before the horse, I see. He seems to now claim every film he makes is about to be a franchise with multiple films, original stand alones and games.

He learned nothing from his DCEU rush to make Justice League.

He did Death of Superman mixed with The Dark Knight Returns all after ONE Superman film. That shows a level of impatience and disrespect for the source material. You don't start off with those storylines before the audience even connects with the characters.

This should not be encouraged. 😐

So this would technically be his third?

I'm not sure if this will succeed but if it flops let's hope he learns something about over-promising and slowly building.

@GhostDog - Yeah, but didn't he have a trilogy of films planned or something like that also?

@DocSpock - snyder said as much, it started from an idea about his own star wars movie but then he decided to make it it's own thing

Yeah. I'll probably watch it when it's free on TV. Or maybe not.

@DocSpock - doubt it’ll ever come to free tv.
Netflix is super bitchy about licensing their content out to „lesser“ TV.

Even if it would be a good marketing strategy.

@grif - I always enjoy reading your comments. You either hate, dislike or don't give a shit about 99% of the movies mentioned on this site.
I'm curious. Can you mention 5 movies you LOVE. They could be anything. From Scarface to Barbie for all I care. I just want you to say that there are 5 movies you LOVE. AND YOU CAN'T SAY 5 MOVIES THAT MY MOM ARE IN.

Or father.

@WEAPONXOXOXO - Haha. This is a funny comment. I thought you were going to start talking trash to him, but you didn't. Grif has been around this site since the beginning, and he's been the same the entire time. He's the site's grumpy bear and it would feel weird without him around.

It looks good. Zack's movies always look good. It's the script I'm worried about. But its caught my interest and I'll be giving it a try.

@IMCOOLURNOT - That's the thing with Snyder. He can make sweet love to a camera like no one else can, but he needs to be kept the furthest away possible from any script.

He should be Director of Photography, but I doubt his ego would let him step down from the director's chair.

A director's cut and a game months before anyone can see the movie itself and have a chance to be interested in more? It really is Star Wars.

@Reeds2Much - Neither of those are to be released prior to the movie though? Are they supposed to announce things after they're released?

Ah, the Mortal Kombat strategy, flood the market with products at one time and reap the benefits.

I like the idea, I miss the time of massive hype with tie in games, books and toys flooding the market.
I remember being so excited to get the Attack of the Clones tie in for the GBA (even if it sucked) at Toys R Us.
Man, I’m getting to an age where I miss childhood wonder.

Can we all just take the victory that is Zack Snyder not making any more comic book movies? Looks cheesy and generic but damn it at least he's not ruining any established IP at the moment! I see this as an absolute win! Carry on zacky boy!

I feel like Rebel Moon will be to Zack Snyder as Avatar was to James Cameron: a new cinematic world and universe.
