Variety is reporting that Paramount Pictures has finally given the go-ahead for a sequel to recent smash hit Sonic the Hedgehog, with director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller all set to return in their respective roles.

While a follow-up was teased in the original film's post-credits stinger, the sequel is currently in the very early stages of development and it's not yet certain which cast members, outside of the titular hedgehog (Ben Schwartz) and his twin-tailed future friend Tails (Colleen Villard), will return.

No word yet on a potential production start date, but it seems probable that filming won't begin until sometime next year, likely setting the stage for a potential 2022 release date.

The recent video game movie adaptation, which starred Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation; Space Force), James Marsden (X-Men; Westworld) and Jim Carrey (Kidding; The Truman Show) in the lead roles, is currently the second highest-grossing film of the year, having earned over $306.8 million worldwide ($146M domestic; $160.7M foreign) on an estimated $95 million production budget.

Sonic the Hedgehog is now the highest-grossing video game movie in cinematic history and also holds the records for biggest opening weekend ever for a video game movie, fourth-best President's Day holiday weekend ever, and Jim Carrey's second-biggest opening weekend ever.

Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog features:
Director: Jeff Fowler
Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog
Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik/Doctor Eggman
James Marsden as Tom Wachowski
Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski
Adam Pally as Wade Whipple
Neal McDonough as Major Bennington
Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone
Frank C. Turner as Crazy Carl
Natasha Rothwell as Rachel
Tom Butler as Commander Walters

Sonic the Hedgehog arrives on Digital HD on March 31
and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on May 19

@dracula - It's a harmless kids movie. I don't think anyone seriously holds it to the same regard as any other movie covered on here, and I wonder why we're even covering it.

@SensitivityII - because a lot of us grew in on sonuc. The venn diagram of those that nerd out on comic books and comic book movies, likely blend in with those that play video games

@SensitivityII - So bent out of shape for nothing that you posted a gif with a missing letter. lol

@ANewPope - All the other gifs of the scene were poorly edited. I didn't make the GIF, I just didn't care enough for the error because my point still gets across. You'd have to be bent out of shape to care.

Need to check out the first movie, but people seemed to really like it, so i guess its good to know the follow up will maintain the quality of the first film.

They are obviously introducing Tails, guessing Knuckles will be saved for the third film.

Might as well skip Metal Sonic and just have Eggman create Shadow if they get a 4th film

@dracula - Is say it’s what you would expect but also about as good as a sonic movie could be. It’s cheesy, there’s super egregious product placement, and the story goes exactly how’d you’d think. But there’s some genuine heart, some genuine laughs, I enjoyed Jim Carrey going full Jim Carrey, and there’s a surprising amount of reverence for the games and even memes of Sonic I felt they largely got the core of what that property is and what fans would appreciate. I think both Tails and Knuckles will be in the sequel, without giving too much away they not only set up Tails but also set up Echidnas as future antagonists

@dracula - why skip metal sonic for shadow? Thats a downgrade if you ask me

@Vigor - they kind of serve the same purpose and from what I can tell, Shadow is a lot more popular

Cool, I’m here for it. The first one was a lot better than I expected and I’m down for a sequel. I’ve now seen it like 4 times (my niece and nephew watch it everyday and I’m quarantined with them) and they keep asking me when the next one is coming out lol I’m hoping the sequel is potentially has Knuckles as the villain. They definitely set up the echidnas being antagonists in the first one and we know Tails is already on earth. It’s be cool if we got Shadow at some point too

@TheUnworthyThor - I fully expected to hate both Sonic and Bloodshot but I surprisingly didn’t. I didn’t love either one but I also didn’t hate them. I might feel different if I had paid for either one but since I didn’t I actually had a good time
