Street Fighter has begun arriving in theaters across the globe, meaning spoilers are already circulating on social media. We won't be getting into those in this article, but we have you covered if you're curious about the movie's post-credits scene count.
The video game adaptation opens in North America later today for Thursday preview screenings, and we're sure many of you will be rushing out to see these iconic fighters go head-to-head on the big screen for the first time since 2009's disappointing Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
Should you stick around when the credits roll? Well, as we first reported on GameFragger.com, yes, Street Fighter has one post-credits scene and, without spoiling anything, it has major sequel implications, so it shouldn't be missed.
In an early review published by Australian outlet Fiction Machine (the movie is already playing there, invalidating today's embargo), Street Fighter is heavily criticised for ending in a way that appears more concerned with setting up a Street Fighter 2 than ending this story in a satisfying way.
"The film stumbles along for a dreary 120 minutes, without a clear narrative focus, and it ends without actually providing a satisfactory climax," the outlet concludes. "It just sort of stops, mercifully maybe, but also so abruptly that it feels like nobody bothered to shoot a third act. Its producers seem over-confident of there being a sequel. Heaven help us if there is."
A bold move that shows the studio is eager to continue the franchise or a decision that will ultimately frustrate moviegoers? That remains to be seen, as Street Fighter's sequel chances hinge on the movie being a box office hit. Right now, it's eyeing a solid $70 million global bow.
Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s "Game Over!"
Helmed by director Kitao Sakurai, Street Fighter is set to bring the battle from the arcade to the big screen with Hadoukens, roundhouses, and all your favourite characters.
The movie stars Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Joe "Roman Reigns" Anoai as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Eric André as Don Sauvage, with Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson as Balrog, and Jason Momoa as Blanka.
The supporting cast includes Orville Peck as Vega, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Hirooki Goto as E. Honda, Rayna Vallandingham as Juli, Alexander Volkanovski as Joe, Kyle Mooney as Marvin, and Mel Jarnson as Cammy.
Street Fighter arrives in theaters on October 16.
