Sony Has Plans For More Live-Action PlayStation Adaptations After UNCHARTED And THE LAST OF US

An Uncharted movie is on the way to theaters, while HBO is working on The Last of Us. These aren't the only projects Sony has planned for its many PlayStation properties, though! Read on for details...

PlayStation has a long list of exclusive titles, and that's only grown with the launch of the PS5. Video game movies have struggled in the past, but the tide has changed in recent years, and Sony is looking to take advantage. Uncharted is in the works starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, while The Last of Us is coming to HBO in the not too distant future.

We don't know what might be next on this growing slate of PlayStation adaptations, but PlayStation President and CEO Jim Ryan has confirmed (via CBR) that more are on the way.

"We're also really thrilled to bring some of the best PlayStation IP to new media like film and television," he said in a video shared during this year's virtual Consumer Electronic Show.

"This is just the beginning of the expansion of our storytelling into new media and even wider audiences," he said of upcoming projects like Uncharted and The Last of Us. The former arrives in theaters on July 16th later this year, while Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are currently hard at work developing the latter for television (likely HBO Max if we had to hazard a guess).

So, it's going to be an exciting few years for PlayStation fans if these comments are any indication. With any luck, a Ratchet & Clank movie is a priority because that would be a lot of fun!

Which PlayStation these titles do you think should be a priority for Sony?

I can see the Tom Holland Uncharted movies continue for a while until they catch up with present day Nathan Drake. So yeah, that might be a franchise in the making.

God of War starring Batista would be a solid enough idea.

I'm still waiting on that Sly Cooper movie they teased back in 2012 (I know it got cancelled but still)

Aren’t games basically movies now anyway

@manofillintent1 - which is why I'm inclined to go for side-stories of these games being told instead of the games being retold.
While being a bad movie, the Assassin's Creed movie had the right idea. Don't retell a story but expand on that universe

It's so weird. I feel like Uncharted and The Last of Us should be the last game adaptations Sony should focus on doing.

A lot of the hype to turn Uncharted and The Last of Us into live-action was based on the fact that they played out like they were live-action to begin with. It made it easier for people to have fun with fancasting or imagining them on the big screen.

In the same sense, I guess Sony sees both properties as an easy place to start. Don't think they should have been it though.

@Kurne - Although I don't disagree, but a huge reason they focused on those two are due to how big those franchises have sold. Not to mention, most of their other exclusives would be big budget sci-fi/fantasy to pull of well. It'll be less risky to start with those than something like Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon or God of War.

I wonder if they’ll have any connect between these two properties in live action. I know in the first last of us game they originally had some reference to uncharted characters but they took it out. Presumably because the idea of the main characters of one of their games dying offscreen to zombies wouldn’t go down to well with some

Let's hope the Bandicoot looks better than the Hedgehog.

I would hope so, didn't they literally just cast Isaac as Solid Snake?

Always felt like Resistance or Killzone would make for an awesome movie. With that being said, a God of War movie would easily be my most wanted.
