Hosted by star of NBC's "Chuck" and avid gamer Zachary Levi, executive produced by Emmy® Award winner Mark Burnett and featuring cutting edge in-show augmented reality and world premiere footage from hotly anticipated releases, Spike TV's ninth annual "Video Game Awards" (#VGA) proved to be a night to remember. Industry giants gathered as the network celebrated the outstanding artistic and technical achievements in the world of gaming over the past year during the two-hour global event which premiered LIVE on Spike TV, MTV 2 and Spike.com Saturday, December 10 at 8:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM PT from Sony Studios in Los Angeles. Internationally, the "VGAs" were seen in over 100 countries and territories around the world.

A host of the most influential members of the gaming industry, as well as stars from the worlds of sports, television, music and movies gathered at the biggest night in video games, and watched Bethesda Studios release "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" receive the highest honor a game can receive when it took home the coveted Vector Monkey after being named Game of the Year. "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" also won Best RPG, and garnered Studio of the Year honors for Bethesda Game Studios.

Other multiple award winners included "Portal 2" which won in five prominent categories, including Best PC Game and Best Multiplayer, and "Batman: Arkham City," which won four Vector Monkeys, including awards for Character of the Year for the Joker, Best Xbox 360 Game and Best Action Adventure Game.
"The Legend of Zelda" creator Shigeru Miyamoto made a surprise appearance to accept the first ever Video Game Hall of Fame Award on the groundbreaking franchise's behalf. "We always push ourselves," said Miyamoto, "and we're grateful you notice."

Additional honors included the second ever Gamer God Award, which was bestowed upon Blizzard Entertainment, the creators of the "World of Warcraft," "Starcraft" and "Diablo" series. Original founders Michael Morhaime, Allen Adham and Frank Pearce were all on hand to accept the prestigious award.
The "VGAs" debuted never-before-seen world premieres of the most anticipated games of 2012 and beyond, including Naughty Dog's "The Last of Us," the surprise reveals of "Command & Conquer: Generals 2," "Alan Wake American Nightmare," Epic Games' "Fortnite," "Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance," "Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 Patriots," "Transformers: Fall of Cybertron," "BioShock Infinite" and the winner for Most Anticipated Game "Mass Effect 3."

This year's show included presenters and appearances by major stars from all over the entertainment world, including Charlie Sheen, Brooklyn Decker, Seth Green, Felicia Day, LL Cool J, Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Tony Hawk, will.i.am, Hulk Hogan, Stacy Keibler, Bellator stars Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler, Blake Anderson, Adam Devine, Anders Holm and game designers Cliff Bleszinski of Epic Games and Hideo Kojima of Konami. The show also featured a performance by Grammy Award winning rock duo The Black Keys, and Grammy Award nominated dance music innovator deadmau5, who helped transform the show with his visual representation of sound into a real life video game experience.

Additionally, NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice was on hand to announce the results of the vote for Digital Cover Athlete of the forthcoming "NFL Blitz" from EA Sports, with Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens selected by fans who cast their ballot at vga.spike.com during the show.

Elder Scrolls games are so overrated. Assassin's Creed should've won more. I'm surprised there's no award for 'Best Storyline' or something. Assassin's Creed would certainly have been a major contender in that one.

I get the feeling a lot of you haven't actually played Skyrim. Without a doubt it deserved Game of the Year, but that's not to say there weren't other very impressive games as well.

Sonic should win almost every year when it comes to music. About a fourth of my iTunes is music from Sonic and I barely ever play the games. It would have been nice to see Mark Hammill when for best actor too, but I haven't Arkham City so I guess I wouldn't know.

I haven't played Skyrim but it looks good. I couldn't get into Oblivion though when that came out. I still have the game and only have 10 hours on it. I think it was because of the way you leveled up in Oblivion that I didn't like. But I guess they changed the way you level up in Skyrim kind of like Fallout 3 which I loved to death, beat that game a few times. Arkham City on the other hand was simply amazing!! Love that game. I would have gone with that. Best superhero game ever, better sequal. Any Batman fan should have picked that up on the first day. I still need to get Skyward Sword cause I'm a huge Zelda fan as well. Oh and for all of you that think Battlefield 3 should have won over Modern Warfare 3 umm no. I've played both and the Modern Warfare series just keeps getting better. I know a lot of people (for some reason) always just play the multiplayer of these type of games without playing the single player. I love Modern Warfares story ever since the first one. And the third on takes place exactly right after the second game and its just purely awesome. I even got a little sad when Soap died in the game eventually, thats how into the story I was. I just recently played Battlefield 3 and played the single player for that and dear god was it boring and crappy, and the storyline was uninteresting. I had the game also freeze on me like 9 times, brand new game. And I had to install the HD graphics for the single player which took more than a gig and was still kind of crappy compared to Modern Warfare. Everything BF3 DOES MW3 DOES BETTER! They have and always will do better.

The world is full of COD addicts, its sad.
I love you BF3!
odie00
odie00 - 12/11/2011, 6:04 PM
I said they were crappy compared to MW3 graphics especially having to install the HD graphics before you play and they still were just alright. I played on the 360 so maybe it was better on the PS3. And I'm not a COD addict, I like different types of games. If BF3 was an awesome game like MW3 was I would have said things differently but in my opinion it wasn't. AND most COD games are really good unlike the different Battlefield games out there. Bad Company was also just an ok game, storyline was alright but the game play sucked. But doesn't matter because Skyrim got game of the year and if that wouldn't, gaurantee either Skyward Sword or maybe even Arkham City would have.
