MORTAL KOMBAT Sequel Officially Moving Forward With MOON KNIGHT's Jeremy Slater Penning The Script

Get over here! It looks like New Line is officially moving forward with a Mortal Kombat sequel, and they've enlisted Moon Knight and The Umbrella Academy scribe Jeremy Slater to pen the script.

Deadline is reporting that New Line has officially greenlit a Mortal Kombat sequel, and they've enlisted Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight; The Umbrella Academy) to pen the script.

According to Business Insider, Mortal Kombat was the most popular day-and-date release for Warner Bros. and HBO Max last year, garnering views from over 3.8 million households through its opening weekend. It also earned over $83.6 million at the worldwide box office. Godzilla vs. Kong and The Suicide Squad rounded out the top three with 3.6 million and 2.8 million households, respectively.

Plot details are understandably under wraps, but it's expected to bring back most, if not all of the original cast, while likely adding a number of new characters from the blockbuster video game series - including the fan-favorite Johnny Cage, who was briefly teased in the first film's post-credits scene.

The 2021 film starred Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Briggs, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young, Laura Brent as Alison Young, Elissa Cadwell as Nitara, and Daniel Nelson as Kabal.

In addition to the direct sequel, New Line is also in various stages of development on potential spinoffs, so expect a lot more Mortal Kombat over the next few years.
