SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Live-Action/CGI Movie Secures A Late 2019 Release Date

Paramount Pictures has officially set a release date for their upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which is being directed by Jeff Fowler and has Tim Miller and Neil H. Moritz attached as producers.

Paramount Pictures has slated their upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie for a November 15, 2019 release date.

Jeff Fowler (Gopher Broke) is directing with a script from Golan the Insatiable creators Patrick Casey and Josh Miller. Neil H. Moritz (Fast & Furious) is producing with Tim Miller (Deadpool) on-board as an executive producer.

A production start date remains unset, but expect filming to begin before the end of the calendar year, if not sooner. As for how they plan on bringing the classic hedgehog to life, Paramount will reportedly utilize a mix of live action and CGI to breathe life into Sonic and his colorful friends.

While Sonic the Hedgehog won't open against any other major release, it will still face competition from several holdovers, including MGM's untitled James Bond 25 and 20th Century Fox's Death on the Nile, which both open the week prior. Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman 2 will also have opened at the beginning of the month, so that should be a strong performer heading into the end of the year. Walt Disney Pictures' Frozen 2 is then set to open at the end of the month.

This will be my first ever exposure to Sonic, I confess. Never really got into the cartoon.

@NinnesMBC - I don't think any of the cartoons are entirely good, I would rather recommend you check out Sonic greatest hits (they are on steam and current consoles) or the new comic from IDW coming on April.

@NinnesMBC - No problem! If you ever want to try a Sonic game I would recommend you any of this:

2D (16 bits):
-Sonic the Hedgehog 2
-Sonic 3 & Knuckles
-Sonic CD
-Sonic Mania*

3D:
-Sonic Adventure
-Sonic Adventure 2: Battle*
-Sonic Generations

The ones with an * are my faves, also if you own a Nintendo DS I would recommend any Sonic game with 'Rush' in its name.

@HannibalLecter - Wholeheartedly agree. The Sonic franchise has always been one of my favorites and I really love what they did with Sonic Mania. I got it for $9.99 on the Nintendo eShop and I end up playing it more than almost all of my Switch games.

Let's be honest:
If this movie turns out to be terrible, it will be really accurate in regards the quality of the modern Sonic games.

@BootyPeep - True that, but at least Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces are an indication that Sega is vindicating themselves.

@HannibalLecter - sonic mania was good, sonic forces was the worst. How do you make almost the exact same game as generations but make it so unfun?
HannibalLecter
HannibalLecter - 2/21/2018, 7:00 PM
@NathimusPrime - Because the main designers from Generations, Colors and Unleashed were absent in Forces (check the credits).

I agree is not as good as Generations but it's miles better than what came before it (Sonic Lost World and Sonic Boom), not to mention they seem to be starting to fix the kiddy tone the games have had since Sonic Colors.

Yes! Is finally coming! But I seriously don’t know what to expect from this, on one hand it has Tim Miller producing and Flower who also lead Blur Studios so this should have great spectacle and visual effects, on the other hand this is still half live-action and based on a videogame, two of the biggest stigmas in movies, but if Sonic can carry 25 years of videogames, a comic, an “OVA movie” and several tv series I’m sure he can carry a movie and and very good one, it just needs the right people.

It's crazy how you can introduce a character to your child, hoping they experience the same joy they brought you as a child. Then your child becomes obsessed and you begin to realize maybe living through your kids isn't a good idea lol. My 8 year old son is a Sonic fanatic and I'd challenge anyone here to best my son in Sonic knowledge and lore.

I'm happy this is coming out and 2 days before my son's birthday! Maybe that will lead to more merch because Sonic gear is not common and the toys are few and far between.

It's time Sonic jumped back into the spotlight! He's the fastest thing alive!

@PrincessLeather - The same happened to me and my daughter but there are already more toys coming (a new line from Diamond Select) and an original Sonic board game with some nice figurines, check it here:

The Sonic games have been horrible for years. Pretty sure this is an accurate depiction of Sonic Team.
