MORBIUS Flops During Second Weekend As SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 Zooms To #1 With An A CinemaScore

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 exceeded expectations at the North American box office this weekend, opening with a whopping $71 million. That's the biggest opening weekend of Jim Carrey's career, and a figure that's far beyond the $58 million its predecessor earned back in 2020. The movie's release also marks Paramount Pictures' best three-day weekend since 2014.

With a debut like this, it's no wonder the studio is moving forward with both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and a Knuckles spinoff. Despite earning a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel has been a hit with moviegoers, something that's evident from its 97% Audience Score and an impressive "A" CinemaScore, the same grade as Sonic the Hedgehog.

It wasn't all good news for movies this weekend, however, as Michael Bay's Ambulance opened at #4 with a disappointing $8.7 million opening.

The Lost City beat the action flick with $9.1 million, while Morbius dropped to #2 with a lowly $10.2 million. Sony Pictures' latest Marvel Comics adaptation is shaping up to be a box office flop, so we're not banking on a sequel ever materialising. The Batman, meanwhile, rounded out the top 5 with a solid $6.5 million, taking its domestic total to $358.8 million since it opened last month.

"Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a truly great video game movie and a sequel that delivers on all fronts," we said in our recent review of the sequel. "Action-packed, hilarious, and full of fun references, this fan-pleasing adventure is a game we'll happily play again."
