Morbius cemented its status as a box office flop at the North American box office this weekend, while Sonic the Hedgehog 2 raced straight to the #1 spot with a massive $71 million debut. Check it out!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 exceeded expectations at the North American box office this weekend, opening with a whopping $71 million. That's the biggest opening weekend of Jim Carrey's career, and a figure that's far beyond the $58 million its predecessor earned back in 2020. The movie's release also marks Paramount Pictures' best three-day weekend since 2014.

With a debut like this, it's no wonder the studio is moving forward with both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and a Knuckles spinoff. Despite earning a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel has been a hit with moviegoers, something that's evident from its 97% Audience Score and an impressive "A" CinemaScore, the same grade as Sonic the Hedgehog.

It wasn't all good news for movies this weekend, however, as Michael Bay's Ambulance opened at #4 with a disappointing $8.7 million opening.

The Lost City beat the action flick with $9.1 million, while Morbius dropped to #2 with a lowly $10.2 million. Sony Pictures' latest Marvel Comics adaptation is shaping up to be a box office flop, so we're not banking on a sequel ever materialising. The Batman, meanwhile, rounded out the top 5 with a solid $6.5 million, taking its domestic total to $358.8 million since it opened last month.

"Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a truly great video game movie and a sequel that delivers on all fronts," we said in our recent review of the sequel. "Action-packed, hilarious, and full of fun references, this fan-pleasing adventure is a game we'll happily play again."

Sonic 2 was super fun. Knuckles and Robotnik especially were great. Hoping we get Sonic 3 with Jim as Robotnik before he retires. Looking forward to the Knuckles series, too. Hopefully the Chaotix or Rogue the Bat pop up in it. Maybe even Chaos.

@kRAVENkIaw - He waited 20 years for a comeback, he is not retiring NOW.
Worst case scenario, he is sitting the next one out to comeback in the fourth movie (appearing in a post-credits scene in 3).

@dracula -
Can’t remember where I saw it, but I saw someone mention continuing the whole theme of “growing up” with Sonic by having him actually have a thing for Amy and kind of figuring those emotions out. With how each new animal character has been introduced with a specific narrative theme, I think that’d be a cool and heartfelt way to work her in. I don’t know how they’d do it otherwise without her just being “there”, if that makes sense.

@dracula - If they stick with celebrities voicing the characters, I'd say Charlize Theron for Rouge. I like your choice for Amy, though. Also, I feel as though they're gonna get Keanu Reeves for Shadow.

Usually I don’t root for a movie to fail…but this needs to die. It needs to bomb hard. Sony is actively keeping the MCU from being able to adapt their own (probably better) version of characters like Venom and Kraven, and they’re now directly messing with the MCU timeline and canon by pulling their characters into this sh*tty side universe.

Let it die.
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 4/10/2022, 3:42 PM
@MrDandy - I argue the opposite. There are plenty more Sony misses than hits, but I like that another studio takes a different approach to Marvel character story-telling and gives us characters we would not see this decade if we waited for Marvel Studios to produce the content. It is almost certain that Hardy-Venom will appear in a Tom Holland/Spidey Marvel Studios film, and audiences will absolutely go bonkers in support. Let them try Kraven, and let's see what happens. It's too bad Morbius got punished critically because a 70% RT audience score is not bad at all. (Sony should have spilled the blood bags and gone Rated R on this -- like the old Blade movies.)
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 4/10/2022, 4:37 PM
@MrDandy - General audiences dont know the diference between Disney, Fox, or Sony, they just know "Marvel", when one of these movies fail, it damaged the Marvel brand in general...

@GeneralZod - day I believe rotten tomatoes and move critics score effect how well move does at box office is day I become president both transformers sequels have score of below 40 and both back to back made billion .,

Morbious score 70 have nothing to do with it it was other reason we don’t know about not from comic fans but average movie fan who does not read comics does not know about character until they see them on movie screen
