WONDER WOMAN 3 Not Moving Forward; MAN OF STEEL 2 Unlikely; Jason Momoa Possibly Eyed For LOBO

We have a huge update on James Gunn and Peter Safran's plans for the DCU here, and it sounds like the current "Snyderverse" era actors' days might be numbered - yes, even Henry Cavill's Superman!

How quickly things can change!

THR has published a new report outlining DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran's plans for the "new DCU," and while the trade notes that things are still very much "in flux" for the time being, it sounds like some major developments are on the horizon.

Arguably the biggest takeaway is that Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 3 is no longer moving forward. Apparently, the filmmaker was informed that the script she co-wrote with Geoff Johns "did not fit in with the new (but still unfolding) plans," and the project is now considered "dead."

In addition - and this will likely come as a bigger blow to fans - it seems Henry Cavill's recent appearance as Superman in Black Adam's mid-credits scene could be the last we see of the actor as the Man of Steel. Even though the Justice League star implied that he'd be sticking around for the long haul in an Instagram post, all future projects featuring his iteration of the iconic character are believed to have been "shut down."

As for Jason Momoa, the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom could be his final time in the role of Arthur Curry - but, as many suspected after a recent social media post, he is said to be in talks to play Lobo!

It's also been confirmed that both Cavill and Momoa were going to have cameo roles in The Flash, but even that may not happen now.

Oh, and just hours after this report from Deadline did the rounds, it seems the Black Adam sequel and any spin-offs have also been nixed!

Unsurprisingly, Matt Reeves' The Batman franchise - which takes place in a separate universe - and related TV spin-offs are safe.

For better or worse, it certainly sounds like Gunn and Safran are cleaning house here, and appear to be aiming towards a full reboot of the DC Universe.

Still, it's important to to keep in mind that nothing is set in stone, and Gunn did recently caution that he and Safran are the only people who know what's in store for the DCU. The Suicide Squad director tends to respond to these type of reports on social media, so an official update may be imminent.

@Desrow - Indeed. What a mess this has been. And I'm not even a hater. I LOVED Man of Steel. They had such a strong stepping off point. The execs just had no awareness it seems. As much of a MCU fan as I am, I hope DC figures out their cinematic universe.

(Brings into perspective that MCU's biggest competition is itself. People are debating MCU phases more than they are Marvel / DC.)

@Desrow - this report has to be bullshit. this would inherently mean that gunn is going to axe and burn his own properties and stars. he is not going to discard cena and the gang after he already said peacemaker season 2 is still happening after he got the gig at as DC head.

@Kadara - I really didnt like WW2, but I agree that I liked Gadot as WW. That said, she isnt enough of a badass and I would like to see another actress get a chance to play her.

"One part that the Gunn-Safran agenda seems likely not to touch, at least for now, is the Matt Reeves Batman universe in which Robert Pattinson dons the cowl of the Caped Crusader"
most important part. should just reboot the dcu in the pattinsonverse but idk if reeves would support that lol

QuiGonsGhost

@tmp3 - totally. I see folks saying it's too grounded or whatever, but that's the perfect starting point for Bats to witness the rise of heroes/supernatural/extraterrestrial idgaf

@GhostDog - lmfaoo as much as i like gunn, i think reeves is a much more interesting film-maker that i would be more hopeful if they used the batman as the new ground to build off of instead of them starting all over AGAIN
Taonrey
Taonrey - 12/7/2022, 8:01 PM
@QuiGonsGhost - I never really understood the too grounded complaint, it's his first outing and batman has always flipped between low level criminals to supervillains.
tmp3
tmp3 - 12/7/2022, 8:02 PM
@QuiGonsGhost - yeah, it's still heightened and pattinson is one of the most exciting actors working today - so much to build off of, but i get that reeves doesn't want to be associated with a "shared universe" after the dceu implosion lol
GhostDog
GhostDog - 12/7/2022, 8:03 PM
@tmp3 - yup The Batman is a nice jumping off point for a new DCU.

Let Batman see the impetus of a broader, extraordinary universe. A sequel film introducing some slight supernatural elements. The heavy lifting has been done for Gunn and Safran if they go this route.
QuiGonsGhost
QuiGonsGhost - 12/7/2022, 8:05 PM
@Taonrey - Me neither. People simultaneously always complain Batman should be "street level" or something along the lines of "WhEn aRe we GOiNg to sEE Mr. Freeze, Clayface, etc"

He can do both but the foundation is set for him to do anything

I remember last month trying to explain this to @ImBatman4realz, that they wont be moving forward with a Batfleck film, Reeve's Batman is the one thing most likely to stay in the DCEU and the Snyderverse is dead but I get that people want to dream.

Rebooting the DCEU and keeping Reeve's Batman was always the smartest move for a new creative direction.

@tmp3 - yep, who can blame him... we rack our brains as fans dealing with this fiasco, I dont envy anyone actually working on these next few projects
RitoRevolto
RitoRevolto - 12/7/2022, 8:06 PM
@tmp3 - Yeah, I don't think so. I'd want them to expand that universe, but I remember an interview where both Reeves and Pattinson said they weren't big on the idea of having Superman & Friends joining their sandbox.
Taonrey
Taonrey - 12/7/2022, 8:49 PM
@QuiGonsGhost - we have Hawkeye and black widow fighting aliens/robots but somehow batman fighting aliens is too much of a leap. Batman as a character is already extremely unrealistic, dude is a master detective, rich playboy and has master hundreds of fighting styles all before he's 30 lol.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 12/7/2022, 10:32 PM
@Taonrey - I've been guilty of saying The Batman's world is too grounded, but this argument is sound. I'm coming around to it.

Because you're right. Like you said, Batman's villains vary greatly. In the comics, and even in The Animated Series.

One adventure may be against someone like Manbat or Clay face. Then the very next adventure is a grounded story about Batman taking on the mob.

And we've only see Riddler and Penguin so far. Riddler is already a pretty grounded character anyway. And Penguin has been portrayed so many different ways that he can fit in either type of world, whether he himself is done grounded or not. (Because he was pretty normal looking in The Batman)

The thing is, we haven't seen enough of the world yet to really know whether fantastical characters can exist there or not. So I say go all in.

My only request is that they bring Batman into a more experienced role before he starts interacting with other heroes or joins the Justice League. He needs more high tech gear first. I can't see him running around with the League driving an old muscle car lol.

Taonrey - 12/7/2022, 11:40 PM
@CorndogBurglar - battinson himself flew in a bridge/bus and walk that shit off like he fell off a bike. I do agree that he needs to be more experienced before teaming with supes

@CorndogBurglar @Taonrey

What I always said is Bale's Bats needed an upgrade to have a chance with JL-level villains. He had problems with dogs and a regular-dude bane.

But that was before the Arkham games which shown the beast Bats should be when fighting, at least to the GA.

It's like Caps: in the TFA film we would never imagine he would one day fight a Thanos, even with Mjolnir. But the character evolution made that possible.

I hope Gunn is able to do that with Battinson too.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 12/8/2022, 6:44 AM
@Fogs - I think they can. They may need to do a time skip Herr and there. Like of the sequel is a fee years after The Batman, and they show him with better gadgets and an upgraded Batmobile. Show him taking less hits while fighting. His armor was already fully bulletproof. I mean we saw 2 guys empty clips from machine guns into him and it didn't even stagger him.

I don't think it would be hard to do it. I will say that Snyder at least did a decent job of showing Batman still being useful against parademons and Doomsday even though they were kind of out his league. If they just have him use his brain and gadgets instead of actually fighting enemies like that then it should be fine.
