8 Existing And New MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE Characters Who Should Be Revealed As Mutants

Ms. Marvel dropped a jaw-dropping reveal about Kamala Khan, leaving us to wonder who else in the MCU could also be a mutant. Here, we explore some potential retcons and share some bold predictions...

Ms. Marvel was a fun series, but little did we know that the show would deliver a game-changing reveal during its final few minutes. Rather than making Kamala Khan an Inhuman, we now know that she's a mutant, and the stage has been set for more of them to start making their respective presences felt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It goes without saying that the X-Men are coming, but which existing characters and new additions to this shared world could also be revealed as Homo Superior?

That big Ms. Marvel twist has left us wondering which other heroes and villains could be outed as a mutant, and yes, we are talking about characters who aren't necessarily part of that group in the comic books! As a result, some of the suggestions here could prove to be divisive, but we hope to convince you that there is some potential to giving them mutations as well.

8. America Chavez

We didn't initially give much thought to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness not revealing the source of America Chavez's powers, but it seems obvious now that she's a mutant.

Heading down that route would avoid having to follow the convoluted origin story of her comic book counterpart, and also shows fans how powerful those with the "mutation" Bruno discovered in Kamala's genes can actually be. Yes, America is from another reality, but this adds up on a number of levels, including why and when her abilities first made themselves known.

America is clearly going to be key to this MCU's future, and the ability to travel between realities makes her incredibly important. We've all assumed she'll become a Young Avenger, but what if we're actually looking at one of this shared world's founding X-Men?

7. Ralph Bohner

One of the biggest MCU disappointments in recent memory was the reveal that WandaVision's "Quicksilver" was, in fact, Westview resident Ralph Bohner. It didn't really make sense, but the explanation that Agatha Harkness had used magic to make him play the part of Pietro Maximoff was convincing enough.

Still, not playing into the Multiverse side of things and actually revealing Evan Peters as a Quicksilver Variant felt like a missed opportunity. It's also one Marvel Studios can still attempt to make right.

By explaining away the Ralph Bohner reveal, this Pietro could be outed as a Variant who Harkness pulled into the MCU using the Darkhold (that's what Wanda wanted to use the book for with Billy and Tommy, remember). Needless to say, he should be a mutant, as should his fallen MCU counterpart...we'll get to that, though!

6. Namor The Submariner

When Marvel Comics first revealed that Namor the Submariner is a mutant, it drove home the fact that Homo Superior have been around a lot longer than people think. Establishing the MCU's Namor as a mutant would be a great way to show that many of Earth's "mystical" or superpowered beings are the way they are for a specific reason.

It's hard to say how Marvel Studios will explain why we haven't seen the likes of Professor X and Magneto before now, but heading down the route of them being hidden on the fictional island nation of Krokoa might solve the problem. You can probably imagine how that could be linked to the secret South American nation the MCU's Namor reportedly hails from.

We don't necessarily want this Namor to join the X-Men, but we wouldn't be against it either! Regardless, there's a lot of potential with this idea, and it's something we hope will be at least touched on in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

5. The Inhumans

So, Ms. Marvel isn't an Inhuman, but what if the difference between Inhumans and mutants really isn't much of a difference at all? We assumed the Eternals might have been very early mutants (rather than highly advanced artificial beings), but just because the Celestials didn't create mutants, that doesn't mean the Kree didn't!

A popular theory is that Kamala's bangle is a Nega Band, something that does make sense when the arm it was taken off is blue. In the comic books, those aliens experimented on humanity (don't forget what they did to Carol Danvers in the MCU), so who's to say they didn't once visit Earth and create beings dubbed "Inhumans" who are, in fact, mutants?

While Inhumans and mutants are different races on the page, blurring the lines in the MCU would open the door to all these characters appearing. The Inhuman Royal Family could be in hiding on the Moon, of course, and the emergence of mutants on Earth could be tied either to The Snap or even the Terrigen Mists.

4. Scarlet Witch

WandaVision transformed Wanda Maximoff into the Scarlet Witch, revealing that she had always been destined to take that mantle. The Avenger seemingly freed herself from the prophecy that said she would destroy the world by decimating every copy of the Darkhold across reality, so where does Wanda go after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

It's been established that the Mind Stone basically switched her powers on, but now we know the Noor Bangle did the same for Kamala Khan, common sense dictates that Wanda also has a "mutation" within her.

This sets the stage for some sort of House of M adaptation down the line, and it wouldn't be remotely hard for Magneto to be retconned as her real father. He could manipulate his unhinged daughter into rewriting reality, potentially merging House of M with Secret Wars and leaving us with a brand new MCU by the time all is said and done.

3. Monica Rambeau

Talking of Westview, Monica Rambeau being another character with a latent mutation would certainly go some way towards better explaining the powers she was granted from attempting to break through the Scarlet Witch's Hex. This would be a departure from the comic books, but no more than how the S.W.O.R.D. Agent's background has already been altered.

Monica learning that she's a mutant wouldn't have to be some sort of game-changing reveal. If anything, it would just give Spectrum something she can bond with Kamala Khan over.

Once again, this is the sort of reveal we think would be best used to show the unpredictability of the mutant gene and the fact that outside power sources can essentially switch them on. A huge amount of energy was unleashed when Thanos and Iron Man snapped their fingers and used the Infinity Stones, so that could be brought into play here as well.

2. Spider-Man

Okay, so now we're heading down a potentially controversial route. Spider-Man's origin story is, of course, iconic. He goes to a science experiment and is bitten by a radioactive spider that grants him amazing abilities; however, that's something we still haven't seen play out in the MCU.

So many changes have already been made to Peter Parker's story, why not reveal the web-slinger as a mutant? Spider-Man: Freshman Year can still show some version of the teenager gaining his powers by a spider bite, but that traumatic experience may very well have been little more than a conduit for his latent abilities making themselves known.

Not every comic book fan would be happy with this and we're not even saying it should happen, but you can't deny it would be an intriguing route to take Spidey down, especially if the hero branded a "Menace" by TheDailyBugle.net finds himself hunted down by Spider-Slayers/Sentinels.

1. Bucky Barnes

Bucky Barnes has become a major player in the MCU, and following the events of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, he's now free of his HYDRA programming. That marks a fresh start for the character, but one that could be quite easily shaken up with the reveal that he's also a mutant.

What HYDRA did to make Bucky a Super Soldier has always been a little vague, so Marvel Studios explaining the group had long been exploring the X-Gene would connect a lot of dots. After all, if they discovered that Bucky was a mutant, then it would explain why those experiments continued and HYDRA eventually set their sights on the Maximoff twins.

Who knows how many other mutants they got their hands on over the years? Either way, we wouldn't expect this to lead to Bucky joining the X-Men, but it would help explain a lot of what we've seen in the past and deepen the history of mutants in the MCU.

Wanda should definitely be revealed as a mutant though, and I'd be fine with America Chavez being one as well. I also wouldn't mind the lines between Inhumans and mutants being blurred slightly, but not like that - I'd rather that the distinction be that mutants are a natural leap forward in human evolution, while Inhumans are an artificial advancement.

Eh, aside from the click-bait entries, there are some decent ideas in here worth some discussion. Making America Chavez and Monica Rambeau mutants is an easy enough route.

Moreover, I do think it's not a bad idea to just make Inhumans mutants. Hell, say some of the earliest mutants banded together and set up their own hidden society, and that's all Attilan is. By inter-breeding, all of their offspring carried the mutant gene, and the terrigen mists just force the gene to activate. They're just a culty, stuck-up mutant society.
