Brett Ratner Doesn't Want To Return To The "X Men" Movies. Awwwww!

And we really wanted him to have another stab at it too! The "X Men: Last Stand" Director tells MTV his feeling on returning to the franchise..

Brett Ratner definitely made an impression with the 3rd movie in the X Men series, but not necessarily a good one! MTV asked him if he would ever consider returning to the franchise..

"The thing with the 'X-Men' universe is, I feel like I've already done it, Certain things I would go after, and certain things only if the script is great."

According to Ratner, some of those projects he'd be interested in as both a filmmaker and fan include the oft-mentioned "X-Men Origins: Magneto" and "X-Men: First Class."

"I heard a rumor that they were going to do a young 'X-Men,' which would be great," he said of "First Class." "I would love to see a 'Magneto' movie personally, because I love the Holocaust backstory. I'd love to see a 'Storm' movie, too."

Even though Ratner enjoyed the Hugh Jackman-starring "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," he wasn't as certain of some of the other "X-Men" spin-offs, such as the Ryan Reynolds-headlining "Deadpool" movie.

"Deadpool? I don't know," he said. "That would depend on the script."

But even if Ratner's return is highly unlikely, he still has his preference as to who should take over..

"I'd love to see [Steven] Spielberg do it," Ratner said. "A Spielberg 'X-Men' movie would be something I'd love to see."

Me too! That would be something.

I didn't even think X3 was as bad as people make out, it was certainly the weakest of the 3, focusing too much on action and neglecting little things like plot and character development that the previous movies did so well. But not a complete disaster i felt.

Brett Ratner is a douche bag. He should direct a movie starring Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Bell, and Dakota Fanning. They will call it The Douche Bag Club.

Guys im not defending Ratner, and i think he comes across like a bit of a tool myself, but X3's shortcomings were not entirely his fault. Even Spielberg wouldn't have been able to do jack with that woeful script. And he did pull a couple of good action scenes out of the bag.

Still don't want him near another one though!

X3 was SUCH a dissapointment. He probably would have ruined Superman Returns (not that it was the best) if he had directed it like he was originally supposed to.

X3 was bad... Script and all. He knows he blew it and now he tries to be cool about it. He should have admitted the all hate mail, bad reviews and all the people who beat him with rolled up X-Men comic books. Hopefully no more comic book movies for him.

I live and breathe Marvel and comics in general. Have watched my share of artsy, independent flicks (even Scandanavian art house films)and I enjoyed Ratner's X-Men the most. Sue me, Singer can go cruising with Spacey in Hyde Park at 3 am and claim he's walking his dog, I'd rather have Ratner return to the X franchise.

Oh noes!! Whatever will we do? How will we live? How can we ever have another comic book movie now?

Oh... wait ewoksoup already did the sarcasm bit. Well what he said plus one then.

Seriously though I know someone that really really hates that guy now. I think it's obvious that Ratner failed in almost every respect, which was a real blow to a lot of people. I am sure it will haunt him for the rest of his career.

I guess Ratner would care, except his X-Men was the largest grossing of all three and received the best reviews of the three.

Rat face needs just just quit being a director all together, then we wouldn't have to worry about him ever being connected to another CBM
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/3/2009, 7:58 PM
Thats not true Cheesey1, it may have made the most cash but it received the worst reviews..by far! X2 is critically regarded as one of the best CBMs of all time so i hardy think X3 garnered that type of praise! I enjoyed X3 too, but it should have been much better.

WHAT? NOOOOOOOOO! But I love Brett Ratner. He brought such good character development and a brilliant plot to X3. I so wanted him to come back to do all future X-Men movies and especially the Deadpool movie. He would have done such a good job. X3 was the greatest comic book movie ever, way better than the Dork Knight which was absolute rubbish! I loved how he killed Cyclops off and took away Rogue's powers. It was a great direction for the characters. Brett was brilliant and he should have received an award for best director. Shut up all you haters and you especially Rorschach!

Oh god I feel woozy after all that mega-sarcasm. How the hell does Supermike act like an asshole all of the time? It is hard work! Seriously though, Bratner should not be let near any sort of movie again under pain of death! Ok I will admit the Rush Hour trilogy is a guilty pleasure of mine but the man is a travesty of a human being! Now Im with Rorschach on this one, even though X3 was seriously one of the weakest comic book movies, it wasnt the horrible horrifying mess that some of you make it out to be. It wasnt Marvel's Batman and Robin. It was still a good movie thanks to the awesome cast and but because of Brett and the crappy writers, it could of been a hell of a lot better! I still like it though and please people, stop insulting the movie, insult the director and if you must insult a Marvel movie, insult Elektra because that was horrible!

And how dare he have doubts about the idea of a Deadpool movie! It might be good! Oh and people, remember what you have read, Bratner said Steven Spielberg could direct an X-Men movie! This is like in the Simpsons when Homer says about his dog running with George Bush Sr and he comes out with "he is barking up the wrong bush". However no one heard him say his cleverest thing ever but we have heard Bratner's one sentence of wisdom and that will be it! He is just going to get dumber from now on!

But I really do think that X3 wasnt the worst but I DECREE HERE AND NOW THAT IF RATNER EVER COMES NEAR A COMIC BOOK MOVIE AGAIN, I WANT YOU GUYS TO HELP ME LOCK HIM IN A CAGE WHERE HE CAN LIVE OUT THE REST OF HIS DAYS!

But yeah I think they should get Bryan Singer to direct and X4 and X5 back to back with Apocalypse and Mr Sinster as villains. Then use Bratner's idea of Steven Spielberg to direct a good X-Men prequel trilogy. It would be awesome and it would not become Twilight with mutants which it is in danger of becoming

Oh and Rorschach, keep up the good work, your articles are always great to read!

And I leave you now my friends with this advice:
When you walk down the road of life, dont get into a car with Bratner, he will probably kill you like he did Cyclops. Later, good people!

Ror, I beg to differ. The reviews by the mainstream critics were very kind. The most vocal members of fandom obviously disagreed, but I still recall that the mainstream reviews were glowing. Anyway, that's a subjective thing, so que sera sera (ha, I must really be old to be saying things like que sera sera).

Dancingmonkey, I won't even get into a line by line debate, but it's pretty evident that singer emasculated Cyclops in both parts 1 and 2. Any old school X-Men fan should've been disgusted with how he was treated. Cyclops was the cold, calculating, bad ass leader of the X-Men (hand picked by Prof. X) who could destroy a mountain with his optic blast and how did singer portray him...
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/3/2009, 8:24 PM
Well, all i know is that i read about 3 highly regarded movie mags from England and they all gave X3 3 stars while the first 2 received 4 stars.

About Cyclops, i always remember Cyc as being quite a gigantic tool in any comics i read! That's how he was portrayed! I though Singer and Marsden did a really good job with the character. And at least Singer kept him around for the whole movie!

Ratner is a cockstain, i mean maybe the script was just a big turd and the actors d!cked him over when Singer jumped ship or whatever ..but hes still a cockstain and X3 sucked..i only liked the fight at Jeans house...

...and yea, being a fan of Cyclops i was seriously pissed off with how he was portrayed in all 3 movies...douche in the first, tool(whos barely in the movie) in the second...fires optic tear blasts in the 3rd

Ror, Cyclops and Jean Grey were always regarded as the ultimate mutants in the lore. People like Apocalypse and Magneto liked to claim that they were the pinnacle, but there was always an underlying tone that Cyclops and Phoenix, the Summers family - yes the Summers as in Scott Summers - were the s*hit when it came to Mutants (the whole Sinister, Cable, Madelyne Pryor etc.). Marsden did a nice job, but singer, IMO, put Cyclops in a position which allowed him to be killed off with very little hoopla. As far as film critics in the UK, it's still subjective. My younger bro. still lives in London and is a part time film critic, so just like you and I, they're human.
Cheesey1
Cheesey1 - 8/3/2009, 8:37 PM
Ratner really couldn't care less what a bunch of people like us have to say and based on the objective criteria, he did a better job than singer.
Cheesey1
Cheesey1 - 8/3/2009, 8:41 PM
One additional comment, Wolvie was definitely a top tier mutant and the most popular, but in terms of the future of the mutant race, within the Marvel universe, it was all about the Summers family.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/3/2009, 8:57 PM
Yeah but that was the comics! I mean that was 2 very distinct stories of the X Men which none of the movies touched on. Maybe if they had Apocalypse or Sinister in there Scott and Jean would have been more prominent, but the first X movies were always going to focus on Wolverine. And unless you make a 3-4 hour movie, its difficult to juggle so many characters. Thats another reason Ratner [frick]ed up. Rather than flesh out the characters that had already been established and introduced he threw in even more! It was like watching a juggling act by a one armed man. Granted that comes down to the script, but as director he could have made changes were appropriate so he shares the blame.

1. The third one made more than the 1st two by FAR so that says something. Maybe we die hards didn't like it but apparently the general public did. Which whether we like it or not is who these movies are made for.
2. All the people on here saying it had no character development and a shifty plot better nit be the same people defending transformers 2. It's a "popcorn" movie afterall.
3. The script sucked but ratner does take alot of the blame since he was the director.

And in case any of you don't get what I'm saying i got one question for ya.......
Do you understand the words that r comin out of my mouf?

Ha, ha, surprise, surprise I disagree, 'cause I've always liked Vinne Jones. As they say, he's well hard and that worked perfectly with the Juggie persona. Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, my son. Although I do agree that Charles and Cain Marko not being related sucked, but I blame that on fox.

Cheesy1, I think Rorschach01 is right about the critical reviews. I think the critcs like the first two a lot better. At least that's what I remember. A lot of unfavorable comparisons to Singer's work.

Also, so what if he cares or not? If tens of thousands of people just like us refuse to watch anymore of his movies, then he will feel it. He will know he messed up somehow.

I don't care how good the movie is, I will never even consider going to another one of his movies or even watching them at home. I know about a dozen other guys that feel the same way. The owner of a local comic book shop claimed to have burned him in effigy after the movie came out and I heard him tell customers to avoid watching the movie because it was, and i quote "the most inconceivably horrid piece of crud since Battlefield Earth". ouch

X3 had it's moments, but nowhere near X2, which is pretty much a real piece of art.

Singer could actually redeem himself with the Sups Returns haters if he would return to the X-Men franchise.
