Colin Firth Was Almost The 'X-Men: First Class' Villain!

While speaking with TotalFilm, Matthew Vaughn reveals that the 'King's Speech' actor was on an extremely short list to play the villain in 'X-Men: First Class'...

The folks over at TotalFilm recently sat down with 'X-Men: First Class' director Matthew Vaughn who revealed to them that Colin Firth was apparently one of the actors being strongly considered to play the role of the films villain, Sebastian Shaw, a role that eventually went to Kevin Bacon.

“There were only two people I wanted for Shaw,” reveals the Kick-Ass auteur, talking exclusively to Total Film. “It was between Colin Firth and Kevin Bacon.

“The reason I thought Firth would be interesting was purely because you’ve never seen him play a villain and I think he would’ve done something really special with it.

“So I said [to the studio] if you’re willing to go with a European actor, I want Firth – and if it has to be American, I want Bacon because I think both those guys are such great actors.”

What do you guys think? Do you think Firth would have made a better Sebastian Shaw then Kevin Bacon?

I hope Marvel Studios snap him up for something.

Dr Strange?? Antman?? Some sort of villain or mentor character. He just adds class to any role like Hopkins, Tucci or Weaving.

I dunno about Firth playing Shaw, I can't imagine him exuding the kind of malevolence that Kev Bacon can deliver.

I think that Colin Firth would really bring out something special if he was gonna do a CBM, I cannot wait for that day should it ever happen. He would bring something that only Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen have done so far.

That being said Kevin Bacon was the bomb in Tremors... and Death Sentence... and Hollowman... and Footloose... and Super...

I have a hard time imagining Kevin Bacon playing the bad guy. I cant shake him being a bike messenger or debating dancing with a bible belt preacher. But sure he can do good. Besides anyone with a solid English (typical London type) accent can do well as a calculating bad guy. If cant just thrown him a cat to pet while he explains is diabolic plan

@Ichaos

Ever seen The River Wild or Hollow Man, Bacon is really good in those movies at playing the complete prick, thats how I imagine his Sebastian Shaw is going to be.

Colin Firth would offer some nobility to Sebastian Shaw. Sebastian Shaw is a New England billionaire who masquerades as an aristocrat, something I don't how well Kevin Bacon might accomplish.

Firth would have awesome if he was a little bit younger. He looked REALLY old in Kings Speech. I think Bacon fits a little better somehow.

Both are very good actors. How is it that a studio as evil as Fox can put together this really great cast of new and old actors?? I mean, isn't everyone supposed to despise Fox or something??

Obviously the Academy Award winner would have done a better job but who are any of us to say really? None of us have seen the movie yet even though a lot of people on here seem to act as if they have when they say it sucks.

Firth would have been great, but I'm excited to see what Kevin Bacon does with the role.

Bacon looks nothing like Shaw. Firth would have been much better.
