Dafne Keen Says Kit Connor Brings "Masculine Strength And Fragility" To X-Men's Cyclops

Dafne Keen, who worked with Kit Connor on His Dark Materials, believes the actor is perfect for the role of Cyclops in the new X-Men, and will bring "masculine strength and fragility" to Scott Summers.

Marvel confirmed this weekend that Kit Connor will be playing Cyclops in the newly announced X-Men reboot. News of Connor's casting actually broke before the weekend, and in a previous interview with MovieWeb at Fan EXPO Boston, X-23 actress Dafne Keen shared her thoughts on his casting.

"I think he's perfect," Keen said. "Kit is such a brilliant, funny, talented, charismatic young man, and he's just perfect. Yeah, I have nothing but wonderful things to say about him. He's such a sweet boy, and he's so incredibly talented. We worked together for years without knowing each other. He was just playing the voice of my soul, which is kind of crazy. We've never met him playing my soul...I think he's gonna kill it. It's gonna break."

Asked specifically what Connor will bring to the role of Scott Summers that we haven't seen before, Keen praised Connor's ability to simultaneously display "masculine strength and fragility."

"What's really wonderful about Kit is he brings me this kind of really amazing masculine strength and fragility at the same time," Keen said.

Keen actually has a bit of an unusual working relationship with Connor, with both having worked together on His Dark Materials. Keen played Lyra Belacqua, while Connor voiced Pantalaimon (Pan), Lyra's dæmon, essentially the physical manifestation of her soul. For much of the series, the two weren't physically acting together since Pan was a CGI character and Connor recorded his dialogue separately. However, they finally did share the screen together in Season 3.

Keen is also no stranger to the X-Men franchise herself, having made her debut as Laura/X-23 opposite Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in 2017's Logan. She later reprised the role in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine, which officially brought her character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There have been reports that Keen is interesting in returning for the new X-Men movie, but so far no official announcement has been made.

Despite their unusual working relationship, it's clear Keen has full faith in Connor's ability to bring a fresh take on Scott Summers to the big screen. And given her own history with the X-Men franchise, she probably knows a thing or two about what it takes to step into the shoes of an iconic mutant.

Connor is best known for playing Nick Nelson in Netflix's Heartstopper, while his other credits include Warfare, The Wild Robot and Rocketman.

The X-Men Saga is expected to kick off in 2028, with Disney confirming the initial cast will star  Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury (Mister Sinister).

Kit Connor is a spectacular actor. (Why are the Brits so good at it?).

Heartstopper may not be for everyone but Kit Connor is superb. He will likely knock this out of the park.

BTW His Heartstopper on screen partner played Billy Maximoff in Agatha All Along. But Connor is the way better actor.

@dragon316 - Because he's White, that's the true extent of their concern.

@gonzor - heartstopper was about pickle smoochers, and wasn't billy maximoff a pole smoker as well? why are comic book movies turning into gay festivals? Didn't like that Inde Navarette alluded to liking women in the Superman series either.

@gonzor - I hope so, because Billy maximoff was insufferable and the acting was no small part of that.

@Ikusa - Not really, EskimoJ spoke the truth. It would only have been a problem for the people dragon mentioned if the casting was not white.

@EskimoJ - yeah, may come as a surprise but as an actor you can change your accent. However, It’s frowned on to change your skin color for a part. Race casting whiners would lose their mind if a POC role was white cast. There is nothing inherently wrong with wanting characters to resemble their book or comic counterparts.

So with this current lineup who else do you think we add? I don’t see how we can do this without Beast, and I really hope we get Angel and Iceman already at the school, with Gambit getting in the mix

@NitroBlastoid12 - No, Feige said there's more. These are just the actors who are currently locked. I do believe the Beast rumors and I think we'll get Angel and/or Ice Man in there

@Loohnutick - I think you’re getting Angel, Beast, and Ice Man. The casting is just not locked down.

One of the only good castings of this dogshit cast. I had some hope for a reboot but with horrid casting choices like Inde as Rogue or Christopher as Prof X even that'll be shit.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@FireGunn - Dude, Inde is a brill actress. All of the casting choices are great. Maybe a question mark with Chris.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 8/15/2026, 12:15 PM
@gonzor - She's a great actress and the wrong choice for Rogue. Two things can be true at once. Christopher is inexcusable to me. Nothing about him gives off Prof X and I don't think he's a good actor either to be honest.

Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 8/15/2026, 8:23 PM
@FireGunn - Calling this dogshit casting is delusional. She's a great actress with no reason whatsoever to believe that she can't develop a proper Rogue character.

@Tonic24k - This looks absolutely awful. She is observably non white whereas Rogue is a pale, white, southern woman. I also don't want to see a midget on screen act like a superhero.

He also looks the part. I like his casting. I hope Beast, Angel, Ice Man, and Gambit (I want an actual Gambit/Rogue romance finally) are in this. Magneto is essential too.

A big concern is that they said the cast met for the first time backstage. What happened to chemistry tests? He and Sink especially must be believable as a couple.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 8/15/2026, 11:54 AM
@Bucky74 - I really doubt Magneto is in this. They're saving him for later down the road. The mutant saga will look something like this

Loki -> Mr. Sinister
Ultron -> Magneto
Thanos -> Apocalypse

Got some real gems in this cast. The only one I’m unsure of is Professor X, but I’m just not very familiar with the actor.

What I am sure about though is Marvel’s bright future baybee!

gonzor - 8/15/2026, 12:06 PM
@SheepishOne - My stance exactly. Great cast. Don't know the Storm actress or Chris (given he has to step into the shoes of Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy expectations will be high).

“Fragility" is not a word I would associate with Cyclops. The MCU REALLY dropped the ball.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 8/15/2026, 8:41 PM
@JediKnight91 - What she said didn't equate to Cyclops himself being fragile. She's just saying he's capable of balancing the two demeanors. Which, albeit, not some perfect description of Cyclops' essence but it does make sense considering he's an empathetic leader and doesn't rely on hyper-toughness (that bad leaders seem to do).

Because he’s gay in real life and Dafne was a lil kid like 5 years ago so she’s all in on the lgbtq movement.

@Matchesz - 1. He's not gay in real life nor will he be gay in the movies.
2. This statement has nothing to do with LGBTQ

I agree he's a great pick. And honestly, I wouldn't mind them bringing in Dafne Keen as next saga's Wolverine
