Director David Slade Talks About Missing Out On The Wolverine!

The Twilight and 30 Days of Night director reveals that the job was his until Darren Aronofsky entered the picture and at that point, he knew he'd lost it...

You may recall that a few weeks before Darren Aronofsky got the job as director of The Wolverine, several other high-profile directors were in contention for the job, and one of those filmmakers was Twilight: Eclipse and 30 Days Of Night director David Slade. However, in a recent interview, Slade all but says he had the gig until Aronofsky became interested and he was slowly pushed out of the frame! Here's what he had to say:

"I must have read or been at least offered 40+ projects. I’ve gone after two. And therefore for reasons that are completely valid, those things didn’t happen. “The Wolverine” was like that, I had a great meeting with Hugh Jackman. We were all ready to go and then Darren Aronofsky, who has a great relationship with Hugh, showed up. You kind of feel like: “well, the girlfriend’s come back. I can either put up a fight here or I can just let nature take its course."

What do you guys think about this? Would Slade have been a better choice, or are you happy that Aronofsky is helming the standalone picture that thankfully won’t have anything to do with Gavin Hood‘s X-Men Origins: Wolverine? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

I liked 30 Days of Night and Hard Candy.
A Twilight movie by anyone would suck, unless they just completely changed the source material.
Actually that's a great idea.. I'm going to rewrite Twilight.

I actually loved David Slade. Hard Candy was awesome. 30 Days of Night blew away my expectations.

And I can honestly say that he made Twilight ALMOST watchable. I'm forced to go to each one by my girlfriend, an after the cat-piss that was New Moon, I REALLLLLLY wasn't looking forward to Eclipse, but I saw a vampire punch another vampire's face off, and several vamps get decapitated.
Slade's a good director.

All that said, he couldn't have made 1/16 of the movie Darren Aronofsky is going to make.

I want to see classic Wolverine costume in the movie.

In the end... the problem wouldn't be the director.... they can only do so much with what they have to work with.... and with FOX running the show; there will come a time when it will be "script and director vs what FOX corporate heads wants" and we all know who wins on that one... and we fans get shafted when those corporate jackhoes don't know diddlysquat on how to make a good CBM movie.

on a side note on costumes.... Wolverine is one of those characters who looks good with and without a dang spandex getup. I could care less if he was in costume or not as long as he's got those twin peaks hairdo, sideburns, and his claws. The costume makes him look cooler, but even in the comics, its been said that Logan could care less about it.

Slade is not bad director (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night), but i think that Aronofsky has more balls to fight against Fox, if they try to step on his feets!

"Slade hasn't done a good movie yet"

No, he has. You may just not have seen them..or have lousy taste! But seriously, I do like Slade but I'm much happier with Aronofsky. Also, he never said that the film would have nothing to do with Origins, I mean clearly its set after the events of that film. I think he just meant that it would be a stand alone film in the sense that he won't be making the film as part of a little Foxy franchise. I'm sure it will not reference the film either, but I'm sure it will still be a sequel of sorts.

Haven't seen any of Slade's films, but I definitely prefer Aronofsky and am glad he was the one that got the job.

I just hope the script is top-notch, though. The first Wolverine film had a brilliant director, and we all know how that turned out. So hopefully this won't be a repeat of the first films failures, or a waste of a perfect director.

hard candy wasnt a bad film. and hes done some decent music videos but hes missing the most important thing that you would need to reboot wolverine (which was necessary after all the horrible xmen films etc) - integrity&respect.

if arnofsky says "ok [frick] it, this is going to be a one off and its going to be called THE wolverine"..the studio just shuts up and lets him get on with it.

F Slade! Aronofsky is an inspired choice and will elevate the material in the same manner Nolan did with Batman. I couldn't be more excited about this movie right now if I tried. I like how Aronofsky has basically told FOX their other stuff was crap and that he's doing this as a stand-alone.
